Dear @ebsco.bsky.social the new database interface is, in a word, awful. Exhibit A: WHY did you replace the easily understandable publication format icons with these nonsense images that make it HARDER for users to scan a list of results & see what's what??? #ebscohno Pls say this is being fixed???

Great book jacket? Or GREATEST book jacket? 🤔

This week’s audiobook + book-book reading. Both are super fun & highly entertaining. An excellent diversion from [waves hand around] all this. #readmore #readingisfundamental

Another book I might have to quit??? Current audiobook centers around a baking competition like #GBBO. The bakers are making bread and the author has them PUTTING THEIR DOUGH IN THE FRIDGE. THE FRIDGE?!? 😱🚩🍞🥖 #ohhellno #iamshook

Current reads… and a confession: gave up on Orbital 1/4 through… I almost never quit a book, but I need audiobooks that help keep me motivated to do my morning walks and… Orbital wasn’t doin’ it. #readingisfundamental #readmore

These are very good suggestions, but a few key ones are missing: attend library board mtgs and speak in favor (many are on zoom), donate $, and vote for measures and bonds to increase funding. Patrons have real power. Don't let a handful of bigots destroy your library.
One thing before tomorrow:

Use your local libraries.

Get your card.

Borrow books, manga, films, audios, ebooks.

Recommend titles for purchase (usually online).

Attend promoted activities.

Fill out those "How are we doing?" questionnaires.

Tell your kids that libraries are good.

They are.

On the bookshelf this week…
Last week I finished Dr. No, another highly enjoyable Percival Everett novel that I highly recommend to all friends working in academia.

This week’s reading (audio and eyeball). My first time reading Ballard, but Pratchett is a long-standing favorite. (so glad audiobooks of the Discworld series are finally on Libby!)

If civil war breaks out, meet up at the library. They don’t know where that is.

Remember that libraries are proof that not every goddamned thing needs to be “for profit.”

I love talking to the youths about librarianship but boy oh boy does it make me feel old. Yesterday I mentioned that I worked in the slide library as an undergrad. That led to me having to explain "This was ye olde days before digital photography... so art history lectures relied on slides." 👵

21 days left to submit your proposals! Come to Atlanta in June 2025!
As you are readying your submissions to Console-ing Passions 2025 at GSU, take a look at the NYT "36 hours in Atlanta" feature.

Lots of recommendations in Summerhill (which is close to campus) for those who plan on staying downtown or in the dorms.

36 Hours in Atlanta
This Southern hub of creativity, nightlife and civil rights history is showing it has an outdoorsy side too, with the Beltline, a popular biking and walking path.

SCMS Board expresses concern over cuts at Academy Film Archive & Margaret Herrick Library. These cuts risk compromising film preservation, research, and documentation of Hollywood's history. We urge AMPAS to reaffirm its commitment to preserving global film history. Full letter: bit.ly/3OfUWX1
