A new study — with Dr. Michael Rahe as corresponding author — shows that the response of T cells rather than the production of antibodies is what makes current vaccines against porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus effective.

#NCStateVetMed is joining the opioid fight! Dr. Margaret Gruen has won a $5.5 million grant from the NIH HEAL Initiative to find ways to measure how chronic pain affects how dogs think and behave. Knowing biopsychosocial effects is important in designing treatment.

Dr. Gustavao Machado is leading our first-ever dry lab (think mousepads instead of pipettes!) This initiative supports the critical work of the Rapid Access Biosecurity App, which helps authorities in 36 states track disease outbreaks among hogs, poultry and cattle.

What is a veterinarian's role in a natural disaster? The event at #NCStateVetMed offered professionals an overview of how to be prepared to be a responder, to work within the county system and to understand field medicine and euthanasia decisions, medical records and self-care.

How does a brain develop inside an embryo? NC State scientist Eric Brooks found that cells perform a complicated dance to determine eventual locations and function. Now, he and his colleagues have created a cellular atlas to study this delicate part of development.

In a new study on stopping the spread of disease among hog farms, Dr. Gustavo Machado and his team found that creating a system to reroute vehicles carrying feed or hogs to other farms or market reduces contact between infected and uninfected farms by 42%. ncst.at/xozv50WHGTR

The 125 members of our #Classof2029 have taken the first steps to becoming doctors. They have an average age of 23 & represent 14 states, Puerto Rico and four countries — and 36 NC counties. Three days of orientation behind them, the students started class today. ❤️
