My thoughts on how El Tri's midfield could look now that Fidalgo and Obed Vargas played their first minutes in Spanish football, in a rare week that saw them meet in back-to-back matches.

Did you know that Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, and José Carreras performed "Nessun Dorma” at the Dodgers Stadium in 1994. It captivated 1.3 billion viewers worldwide the night before the US World Cup final.

They didn’t sing in English.

I'm intrigued to see the outcome, but it's very noticeable that several Argentine footballers are taking the calm route ahead of the World Cup. All of them want to arrive to the WC in peak form, we'll see how that looks in the Finalissima next month.

The next weeks for Atleti will be interesting because it will determine the continuation of the Cholo Simeone era. If Cholo ends his tenure this summer, I wouldn't be surprised if Filipe Luis becomes Atleti's new manager. Something to keep an eye on in the next weeks with Obed Vargas.

1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken.

Hundreds of kids are still detained.

We’ll let the children’s words speak for themselves. 🧵

Cruz Azul looks repaired, the sporting staff picked the right refuerzos. Larcamon with a sigh of relief. #LigaMXeng

A couple of months ago, the rumor that Ajax wanted Elias Montiel was real. As I watch Obed Vargas' rapid integration to Atleti's day-to-day, I wonder about cases like Montiel, Victor Guzman, Chiquete, Fidel Ambriz and I know I'm missing others, but clearly if the price tag was "prudent"...

Vargas will need to be patient. The situation in the midfield for Atleti will be constantly changing as new players are added to the injured list. Every single training session will be important to prove Cholo that he deserves more playing time, but Vasco and Rafa must be happy that he's in La Liga.

OBED VARGAS DEBUT INCOMING.

Forty-five minutes left in the series against Betis. If Atleti maintains the same dominance from the first half, Obed Vargas' debut after the 60th minute mark doesn't sound so crazy. #ElTrieng #CopadelRey

That's what you call an epic baile. Atleti leads 3-0 in their visit to Betis. There's a clear difference between one squad and the other. One of the best performances so far for Cholo's side in the current season.

Both Fidalgo and Obed with possibilities to play in tonight’s Copa del Rey match between Betis and Atleti, which looks like it will have a 66,000 plus crowd. Stuff out of movies.

It's so strange to see Public Investment Fund (PIF) signage in all CONCACAF events. De, 'Public', no tiene nada ese dinero lol

This by Ruben Uria: "What we just witnessed at the presentation of this young man, Obed Vargas, is pure Atlético Madrid history. It's an impressive, emotional story that seems straight out of a Netflix series script. It was incredible to hear this kid talk about Atleti. I hope he succeeds."

I've seen many Atleti presentations through the years, and it's rare when the crowd present starts applauding when a new signing makes a declaration. Obed Vargas has won over the high ranks of the club in a matter of hours. His Atleti dream has started in impeccable fashion. #ElTrieng

When Efrain Juarez arrived to Liga MX after his short, but successful stint in Colombia, I expected him to excel in Liga MX, but it hasn't been the case. He's been hammered in the Liga MX ecosystem, which can be deterrent if you create 'a me against the world' environment. Troubling times for him.

In the wake of the (infuriating) WaPo news, I appreciate people being open about how tough it can be to freelance & why outlets/teams/media orgs are so valuable.
A lot of people cannot just start a paid newsletter or become freelancers to sustain their careers. The sports, metro, and international desks did work that requires *team* resources, like legal checks, documents, access to archives, and long-term beat experience.
