Good Work from SCMP, but we should be cautious with terms like "crackdown." There Was no Cambo crackdown—rather, it staged a faux show of force , and the compounds resumed operations within days or weeks. Myanmar's ‘crackdown’ appears to also be largely performative.

“If in the next few months, a few key figures aren't sanctioned by Western countries, then it's beginning to seem like there really is no limit for what these criminal syndicates can do, and they can just keep growing,” Southern said

My thoughts in CNA

Southeast Asia’s rampant scam industry still morphing, adapting despite Beijing flexing its muscle
Recent crackdowns by Thailand and China on scamming compounds in Myanmar have shown Beijing’s willingness to exert pressure to protect its own people and interests, experts say. But it’s unlikely to expand to region-wide action to rein in the syndicates involved.

“It's not stopped. It's moved to other compounds that are rapidly developing further down the river and it's growing everywhere in the region. And I think the world really needs to not take its eyes off this,”
