In this 6th Debunk of the Day, we’ll talk about a complex and controversial topic: conscription. It is used by vatniks to attack Ukraine for drafting men to fight, while conveniently ignoring the alternative, including the horrors of conscription into the Russian army.

Military obligations are a reality in many countries, from the most peaceful democracies to the most tyrannical dictatorships — unless you have “bone spurs”. Some argue it is a necessity for defense against invading armies, especially for small countries.

Others point out that it goes against individual rights or that a professional army is better. And Zelenskyy might agree: he did in fact end conscription. But then a full-scale invasion happened: exactly why many nations, including the US, still keep some form of draft.

While some Ukrainians fled to avoid conscription, many others volunteered to fight, including men & women returning from abroad.
Ukraine is facing a genocidal invasion, and would neither need nor have conscription if Russia hadn’t invaded in 2014 and 2022.

For Russia conversely, both conscription and the war are a deliberate choice.
Russian conscripts are brutally hazed (“dedovshchina”), and while Putin initially denied that conscripts would be sent to the front, refuseniks now face 10 years in prison and inhumane punishments.

And Russia also forces Ukrainians from occupied territories to fight against their own country: yet another war crime.

So yes, in an ideal world Ukraine wouldn’t be conscripting anyone. But right now, the alternative could end up far worse: men would get drafted anyway…

…but to fight for Russia, civilians wouldn’t be protected, and more children would be kidnapped — and then sent to fight against Russia’s next target, which could be you. More European countries are in fact reintroducing conscription due to the risk of further Russian aggression.

Don’t want Ukrainians to be conscripted, or your children to be conscripted in the next war? Then make sure Ukraine gets all the equipment, air defense and air support they need, now.

And help us defeat the massive propaganda that makes this war possible:

In today’s Vatnik Soup, we’ll introduce the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It’s mostly known for organizing sporting events, and for being supposed to foster the Olympic ideal while actually submitting to dictators.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was founded in 1894 in Paris by Pierre de Coubertin with a noble goal: promote peace through sports. Politics out, sportsmanship in: sounds great in theory.

But in practice, the IOC has a long history of accommodating authoritarian regimes, always in the name of “neutrality,” “dialogue,” and “keeping sports separate from politics”, usually not in a particularly consistent or moral way.

The most infamous example is the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The IOC allowed Hitler to use the Games as a propaganda showcase for Nazi Germany, which already had anti-Jewish laws and concentration camps in place, and swastikas and Nazi salutes everywhere.

They still sell the t-shirt.

The Games helped legitimize Hitler’s regime on the global stage. It was among the first major spectacles extensively filmed and broadcast live internationally. Black athletes achieved remarkable success, yet Hitler did not shake their hands nor question his race theories.

During the 1972 Munich Olympics, Palestinian terrorists murdered 11 Israeli athletes. The IOC declared, “the Games must go on,” a phrase that became symbolic of how preserving the spectacle often took priority over confronting political reality.

The 1980 Moscow Olympics took place just months after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. More than 60 countries boycotted the Games in protest of the aggression. The invasion was devastating for Afghanistan but ultimately became a defeat for Moscow.

Russia had many athletes banned from the 2016 Rio Olympics, but not due to its invasions: due to its massive state-run doping program. Its athletes later competed as “neutrals” in PyeongChang 2018, Tokyo 2020, and Beijing 2022 instead of under the Russian flag.
