(Ethno)Music(ology), music-y stuff, academia things, stuff my students say, Nashville/Belmont, aspiring carillonneur, sports-y things (mostly of the UK & UGA varieties)
Didn't do a particularly good job teaching grad Intro to Music Research (2nd time, way more students than expected, planning, etc. etc.) BUT I sure did a bang up job wrapping it up tonight. Some individual & group reflections & feedback plus a potluck (tiramisu! whipped feta!).

Thrifted dress doesn't fit right but there was a dollar in the pocket, like a little consolation prize. I'll take it!

Lots of great options but I bought “The Hours Are Long, But the Pay Is Low: A Curious Life in Independent Music” by one of the founders of Bloodshot Records, Rob Miller. Got to talk to him quite a bit for my research & can’t wait to read!

We‘ve gone from “why are there avocados on the sideline?” to that onside kick. What a game.

A bluetooth mouse is the latest fix - trackpad is dead. Temporary? Yes. But I can use my laptop now, so I'll take what I can get.
We’ve been on borrowed time, it seems. The cursor has disappeared & trackpad isn’t working even after multiple restarts.
Wonder how bad is it to use the work laptop for all personal things until say… Black Friday or so? 🤔
IT LIVES-ish! Well, it turned back on but the screen keeps going black. I did start a new backup of everything, so there's that.
Sometimes delulu is the solulu? I probably still need to take it somewhere for something I guess.

Did I let my grad class go early tonight? Yes. Did I do this so I could watch the second half of the UK game? You can’t prove anything.

iPad bluetooth keyboard is inexplicably stuck on two numbers so when it’s paired & you try to type… it’s 6-7 over and over again like a ghost gen alpha playing a trick

Laptop is still dead, and I'm in complete denial. Or delulu thinking it'll turn on tonight?

Well, let's just hear the angel tag now.
Soundscape of the GA-FL game is wild. Hearing both bands equally-ish. Can't decide if my brain just WANTS to hear the Redcoats louder or if they are a little bit louder.

Caught a last couple of papers by friends this morning & that’s a wrap on #SEM2025
Saw/caught up with a bunch of folks & learned new things so I’ll call it a W. Laptop is still dead but I’m not giving up on it yet!

Just knocked out a task I've been putting off for weeks. It required a phone call but was super easy & took less than 5 minutes.
Will I do some other task quicker now? No.
Did I learn anything from this experience? Also no.

Started out today with the Education section workshop & then heard one of my diss committee members/grad school profs (Dr Kidula) give a section keynote that was lovely & brilliant! Also managed to watch some college football #SEM2025

Yesterday’s highlight was starting the day w/ sacred harp panel & sing, catching up with grad school folks/prof & meeting new UGA kiddos… less highligh-y was spilling a full glass of sparkling water onto the keyboard of my macbook

This evening's highlight (after the reception that was equally nice, crowded, and awkward) was the Asian American Listening Party. Got to chat with acquaintances/colleagues and meet a recent Belmont MM grad who is considering a PhD in ethno (I suggested she not, lol) #SEM2025

After my power nap, the Appropriation/Authenticity panel started w/ more banjo (T. Turino), 1st/2nd gen Balinese artists in the US (Putu Hiranmayena), Bi-musicality & academic world music ensembles (Donna L. Kwon) & popped over to celebrities in ethno research (Anneli Loepp Thiessen) #SEM2025

Went to all the things today & tho it seems like forever ago, this morning I heard fab papers on Mexican music/identity in the MS Delta (Sophia Enríquez) & the soundscape/"hot" noise of Taiwanese wet markets past/present (Yun Emily Wang) #SEM2025

Academic conferences remind me of grad school in a lot of ways so in that spirit, I have come back to my airbnb for lunch & a power nap

Reappearing in this space to talk about SEM & wax nostalgic re: conferences back when Twitter wasn’t terrible #sem25

Ran into a colleague & we said the things (let’s get together, we should catch up, it’s been too long etc). And… they messaged me like 3 hrs later to make plans & I was shocked & so pleasantly surprised!

Taught a middle/HS music camp this week & while some parts of teaching can be the same regardless of age/level, I've never had to ask a college kid to stop licking the desk in class. Also, no loose teeth... thankfully

Trying to explain to my florentine taxi driver that Nashville had a tourist component & lots of bachelorette parties. To which he said, ah prostitutes! Wild girls!
I did my best to correct this but possibly there’s a guy in Florence now who thinks Nashville is overrun by prostitutes.
