On this day in 1841 John Clare completed the final leg of his 80 mile walk. He woke delirious with hunger and resorted to eating grass by the side of the road. A coin from a passerby this afternoon enabled the purchase of some bread and cheese.

The third day of Clare’s walk home. His account becomes less coherent and more fearful. He feared losing his way again so stuck close to the Great North Road. Exhausted he slept in a ditch by the side of the road.

On this day in 1841, Clare woke in the shed after an unsettling dream. He took to the road but his shoes were falling apart. Hungry, he resorted to begging for any spare change but most passers by avoided him. As night fell, he hid again by the road near Potten, but was unable to stand the cold.

Today in 1841 Clare set out from Epping to walk the 80 miles home. Struggling to find the route out of the forest to the Great North Road, he asked for directions at a local pub. Once the road was discovered, he made good progress to Stevenage.

On this day in 1841, Clare ‘did nothing’… Perhaps he brooded on his escape.

(This does get more interesting from tomorrow…)

On this day in 1841, John Clare returned to a gypsy camp in Epping forest. The gypsies had previously offered to help him escape from his confinement in Allen’s Mental Asylum (in exchange for £50). But on returning today, he found their camp abandoned.

I’ve learned when developing for Mac - if you get your app to build, certificates created, app archived, notorized and successfully approved by the App Store - don’t ever touch that Mac or its operating system again. Wrap the machine in bubble wrap and preserve it forever.
