I don't feel like it was adequately conveyed to me as a boy just how vital my role as human garbage disposal would be to the successful operation of my household when I became a father.

I had a weird uncanny valley experience on the phone just now. At the start of a call I would have sworn "Alex" was a (very good!) bot. His vocal characteristics and rhythm seemed ... too good? By the end of the call it was clear he was human, but boy, it took a while for me to be convinced.

Somehow I've made it this far in life without ever having used a fax machine. But while probably a bit unusual for a person of my demographic, it's not all that shocking. What really seems to surprise folks is that I've never used a DVR and I have never watched a Blu-Ray Disc.
Today, I passed along the secret knowledge of how to use the fax machine to two LJS staff born well after 9/11.

I looked at the headlines that Google had for me and ... wow. I can't believe nobody's talking about the Husker men's basketball team getting shut out. Brutal.

I don't know if I'm paying the least I could for insurance, but it's nice when I call my agent, say "We haven't heard from the other party's insurance", and the response is "Oh, I'll call them right now and make sure you hear from them right away". Value > Cost.

Richard Dawkins' "The Selfish Gene". I know, I know, Dawkins has his issues. To be honest, I don't remember much about the actual book itself. But that book started me on a journey that continues to this day. I appreciate it for that.
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

Y'all should give Collateral Damage a listen. I have enjoyed Balko's journalism since his very early days. He puts out great stuff.

My only complaint about the podcast is that listening to it while I run screws up my heart rate data. But these are good things to be angry about. Go listen.
The latest episode of my podcast Collateral Damage is up today.

When we started this project a few years ago, we had no idea how timely this episode would be.

It's about Veronica and Charity Bowers, a mother and daughter killed in 2001 when the CIA and Peruvian Air Force shot down their plane.
Episode Six: Airborne Imperialism
A U.S.-led program killed Veronica and Charity Bowers in Peru after mistaking their plane for drug smugglers. Trump’s Venezuela boat strikes make their deaths newly and urgently relevant.

I once had the pleasure (??) of refereeing an NAIA playoff match in similar conditions. It was wild. We had guys with shovels working furiously to clear one end of the field while play was on the other end. It was glorious, memorable chaos.
The CPL Final is in the middle of a snowstorm in Canada, true North American soccer heritage...how could it get any better?

Rise and shiver! Happy Halfsy Day to all who celebrate, #LNK!

I have no idea what I want to wear. Tights or shorts? Hat, ear covering, or bare head? Which gloves, with or without hand warmers? So many choices.

Oh look, civil asset forfeiture leads to law enforcement corruption yet again. "Who could have seen this coming?", ask those who have paid no attention to patterns of rampant abuse by law enforcement agencies across the country for decades.
New at Flatwater: Money seized along I-80 has brought millions into Seward County. But that funding is frozen now, after a federal review found the sheriff’s office had impermissibly spent nearly $800,000 of that money. 🔗 buff.ly/jOAdLC4

In addition to my cinnamon roll experiment, I also decided to try my hand at challah today. Unfortunately I've not found Sadie's recipe, so I used one that seemed like it might be in the same ballpark. Imperfect, but not bad for a rookie.

After bugging my mom for ages, she finally relented and gave me her cinnamon roll recipe. I can see why she procrastinated: these babies are really freaking good and I may entirely subsist on cinnamon rolls for the rest of my days.

Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday. This is your friendly reminder that:

* Most studies suggest year-round Standard Time is better for human health.
* All studies conclude that switching back and forth is terrible for human health (and scores of other reasons).

My sister just lost her beloved, (seemingly) healthy dog at the young age of 6. The cause is unknown. I've realized that though I've worked since Sadie died to improve my support of those grieving human deaths, my ability to comfort those mourning pets remains inadequate, if not incompetent.

Re-upping this piece once more because it was a long time in the making. But also because after he was wrongly accused by media outlets, law firms, and politicians, Silverman deserves to have as many people read about his vindication as possible.
Accusing Jordan Silverman
A D.C. teaching assistant was accused of molesting up to 15 kids. Multiple law enforcement agencies cleared him. But his nightmare was just beginning.

I remember when Halloween was "cancelled" -- delayed, really -- in #LNK in 1991. The conversations in the halls of Pound Junior High School were not friendly to Mayor Mike that day, let me tell you!
Halloween 2025 forecast: morning low 37°F, high 56°F, Saturday morning low 33°F. Coldest Halloween high temperatures 1991: 29°F & 2002: 31°F. Halloween a week after the historical 1997 Lincoln snowstorm high was 67°F. Halloween was cancelled in 1991 NOT 1997 the year of the Oct. 25 snowstorm
