RIP Mani. A devastating loss to music. Mani was half of one of the greatest rhythm sections of my generation - a band whose impact was so significant, so consequential, that I hope he knew just how special he was.

Exactly 60 years ago today, The Beatles were awarded MBEs by The Queen. “‘It was quite funny,” said John Lennon after. “But she was sweet. I think she seemed a bit mumsy to us because we were young boys and she was a bit older.”

“You’ve got to be able to be proud of yourself, man,” the late great David Crosby told me in 2018, imparting his hard-earned wisdom, “and that means you gotta stick up for what you believe in, otherwise you can’t. It’s that simple.”

Happy birthday Croz, wherever you are.

In 2019, a year beset with trauma - bacterial infection, pneumonia, a serious fall, Parkinson’s - I asked Ozzy Osbourne what, in his long and storied career, he was most proud of. “Not dying!” he laughed. “I mean, it was just the best fucking party of my life.”

Happy 78th birthday Mick Fleetwood!

I spoke with Mick in 2017 about early Fleetwood Mac, as documented in his book, Love That Burns. As we finished, and he considered his whole dramatic FM journey, he said: “No matter what, this has all been worth a damn. It’s been worth it.”

Happy 81st birthday Ray Davies, the greatest chronicler of British life in song.

“I’m a kind of inarticulate person,” the quiet and humble writer told me in 2017, “but when I get a guitar and I get a phrase, I can communicate more in a line than I can if we spoke all day.”

Happy birthday to the greatest songwriter ever. We should be so thankful for all that Paul McCartney has blessed us with - to us, they’re life’s treasures; to him, it’s natural. “To me,” he once told me, “it’s songs of mine that I want people to hear just cos I think they’re good.” We do too! HBPM!

Losing Brian Wilson is a crushing blow. The beautiful music he blessed the world with changed everything - culture, history, art - and made all our lives richer for it. Thank you for all you leave behind, Brian. The world is a better place for having had you in it. RIP.
