Why Elster and Ariane being trans matters so much to me #signalis
Ariane and Elster being so heavily trans coded is very important to me. To borrow a bit from my friend Athena, who put this all into words better than I: Ariane embodies the social difficulties of being trans, she's ostrasized, bullied, pushed to abandon the hobbies she enjoys and accept a life of conformity. It's probably not intentional, given the devs are German, but in the US, there's a not insignificant amount of trans fems who join the military before coming out in desperate attempt to "save" their masculinity. Elster embodies the physical and psychological difficulties of being trans. She has memories of a past life she doesn't fully understand, she's got the neural pattern of a human imprinted on a machine, which carries all sorts of implications around body dysmorphia/dysphoria. Her journey through the game is to remember who she is, and what's important to her. I write both as trans by default in my fics and it's important to me.
