The tremors were felt in London and seismographs recorded it in Morocco. 70 people and 200 cattle perished. A nearby reservoir of 450,000 cubic metres of water was obliterated. The resulting Fauld Crater covers an area of 12 acres and can still be visited today.
80 years ago today 4000 tons of munitions detonated at RAF Fauld in Staffordshire. It was the biggest non-nuclear explosion in history at the time and is still the largest explosion ever on British soil.
