What role does the local community play in democracy? In his book In der Nähe’, Strauß argues that neighbourhood closeness is pivotal. @steffenmau.bsky.social praises him for vividly showing how a collective East German has “we” emerged (though contested), but finds the argument overly optimistic.

Many East Germans still sympathize with Russia - despite decades of Soviet occupation & now Putin’s war. Why? Nostalgia, post-reunification disappointment, capitalism’s failures, & as @steffenmau.bsky.social notes, an image of Russia that hasn’t evolved beyond the democratic hopes of the 1990s.

🌏 Is it too late to do anything about the climate crisis?

Drawing on Jens Beckert’s "How We Sold Our Future" and Andreas Malm & Win Carton’s "Overshoot", David Kampmann's @bjsociology.bsky.social review says no, but the real question is how we pursue radical transition.

Climate is a class issue. @lwestheuser.bsky.social: Policy flops without distribution framing. Rather than framing the conflict as “eco-middle class versus ordinary people”, it should be framed as “top versus bottom”.
