In fact it was the recision clause in Enzo’s contract, but same thing. The stipulated clause was not saying Enzo was worth €121m, but that that was the level of silly money that Benfica would not be able to refuse. Benfica made a huge profit, yes, but lost a vital piece of their team.

This is a rather trite analogy for the football transfer market. In January 2023 Chelsea paid Benfica €121m for Enzo Fernandez. “He’s not worth half that!” people said. Well, of course not! But Benfica didn’t want to sell him, so Chelsea offered silly money which Benfica couldn’t refuse.

When you finally decide to sell them, say for £100, to rub salt in the wound, you discover he’s only coughing up £20 up front, and will pay the rest in £20 instalments for the following 4 years!!

“£60? £70? £80?” You like your trousers very much, know it would be very difficult to find a pair exactly the same, even if you found something similar you might have to pay more for them than you’d paid for yours - but if he keeps upping his offer, at what point do you give in and take his money?

Imagine a guy comes up to you down the pub and asks you how much your trousers are worth. “Think I paid £50 for them” you say. “£50? OK, I’ll buy them! Come on, whip ‘em off!” But you don’t want to sell them. And don’t want to be seen walking around in your manky Y-fronts. So you tell him.

Following on from the comment about Ben Doak saying he only sees blank faces of opposition players, there is a medical condition called Prosopagnosia, or “face blindness”. Maybe he suffers from that!
