feelings are high tonight. since last night i’ve been trying to help my 17 yr old son deal with the fact that his best friend, a 20 yr old israeli, just got sentenced for awol or desertion (depends on the ruling) b/c he refused to be part of genocide and stayed home when it was his time to serve.

this feels apropos right now There’s Smoke in the Air by Claire Marlatt 08/28/2024 11:22am Today the wildfires are ravaging a forest nearby. Today my body is made of pain. Correlation does not equal causation. But today The glass that grinds my nasal passages and keeps my feet from treading the path of peace The vice that keeps my head in thrall and firmly tells my inner child to sit facing the front The fist that holds my muscles so tight and my hopes in check lest I start to dream again These things seem inextricably linked To the ravaging of life and home To the smell of green turned to ash To the shadows made by human hands To all these blights that mar the earth. My body is but another fruit from the earth. Today it cries out in sisterhood with a forest. Today it cries out in fellowship with the orphaned fawn. Today it cries out in empathy with the bone dry dirt. I sit in silent reverence —Ash slipping through my fingers— In hopes that this cycle of rebirth Might spring forth newly sprouting leaves And a chance to see and be seen By an earth so deep and loamy That I’m no longer tied to this body of mine But made of firmer stuff, like light filtered on the forest floor Or the smell of spring rain.
