Two framed prints in my downstairs hallway. One is of a letterpress protest poster, with the MLK quote "the time is always right to do what is right" in black ink on a red background. These were one of 3 designs made by Pyramid Atlantic Art Center for people to use in the George Floyd protests in 2020. The other is a screenprint, a black line drawing on a yellow background. The subject is a bearded African American man in a cap, a figure in the African American Civil War Memorial on U Street in DC. The title is "Soldier of U Street" and the print is signed by the artist, Imar Hutchins. A letterpress print hanging above a light switch at the bottom of our stairs, with black type on a mottled tan background. The text reads "We who believe in freedom cannot rest, Ella Baker." The artist is Amos Kennedy Jr.

I tried to use a blue palette for my watercolor practice today, and it really didn't work for me. I often sketch with blue pencils, so I was surprised at how much I felt like I was rendering a drowning victim (sorry @bmanuel.bsky.social). Sticking with my favorite yellow-orange palette for now!

The way Bluesky labels any nudity as "adult content" is part of this. Self-labeling holds this line a bit and lets us coexist in a public space. But if we're arguing about whether specific nudes are sexual or not, we've already lost.

(People still get to consent to see nudity, though. Self-label!)

Pay attention to the newly accelerated war on porn.
If you are not already, pay attention to increasing attacks on porn even if porn is something you do not care for. The attacks, architected and carried out by zealots, are intended to broaden the classification of "porn" to include all sorts of speech determined "subversive" by zealots. This is what has drawn me to this community and fight. I'm not a porn super fan. "Obscenity" is long where this battle has been fought and sex workers are on the front lines of that fight. *Their* free speech battle is one you benefit from, fellow artists. Don't get me wrong! I don't mean to distance myself from love and appreciation for smut, subversive art, literature, trash and more. I am a true fan of all of the above (in no small part because I also know and appreciate its role in the history of this struggle). But one should not feel they have to be a fan to appreciate what this fight means for the freedom of speech (especially speech including queer and feminist perspectives, which have often been grouped together as "subversive" and "dangerous" texts in the name of state censorship).

Love these! I am an easy sell on mugs: we have so many that we shifted our annual (pre-covid) holiday party to a coffee morning and used mug selection as a type of Rorschach test for our friends.

You’ll probably see this screenshot floating around a lot but it really was wonderful to see Lynch put a scene in Twin Peaks: The Return where he has his character literally stare at the camera and say that you should either support trans people or die. I needed to hear that in 2017
