So I'm learning Swift. Is it really common practice to extend built in structs? I know in JS that it's pretty discouraged to add to class prototypes. Is it because Swift is a more controlled environment?

I've started reading Writing an Interpreter in Go by Thorsten Ball. The first section on lexers/scanners has been good. I also have been wanting to read Design-Driven development by Eric Evans. Since Go is so cool with its types I'm wondering if I'm reading them out of order.
