American author of short stories and the writer who took mysteries and the macabre mainstream, Edgar Allan Poe was born on this day in 1809. His life was tragic.

Before the age of three, Poe was abandoned by his father and orphaned when his mother died. He did get a good education, thanks to his foster parents, but he left the University of Virginia and was expelled from West Point before earning a college degree. He turned to writing, most often for newspapers, and he developed a unique form of literary criticism. In time, he began publishing poetry and prose. In 1841, he published Murders in the Rue Morgue, which invented the genre of detective fiction. Arthur Conan Doyle credited Poe and his short story as inspiration for Doyle’s most famous literary creation, Sherlock Holmes. In 1845, Poe’s poem The Raven took America and England by storm and it changed Poe’s life. He was in demand, and invited to read the poem at public and private gatherings. Though Poe is considered one of the first Americans to make a living solely by his writing, he was unable to monetize the Raven’s or his own popularity. He tried, but his wife – who was also his first cousin – died two years later. And two years after that, Poe died. Neither the cause nor circumstances of his death are known.
