Soban by Joseon is a Sunday pop-up in a large cafe called Conservatorium, which sits right opposite Sydney Olympic Park Station. Street parking is for 30 minutes (6am–6pm) during their lunchtime operating hours. This isn’t lost on the kitchen, who churn out soban (tray lunches) fast… #food

Naive art depicts the proprietors—husband-and-wife John Evans and Sonia Grieg—in front of the pointy-roofed restaurant. Despite doing two sittings—the first with a strict 5.30pm start—South on Albany is the kind of spot that inclines you to unwind. #food

Amuro is my pick of Sydney’s sake bars. It’s tiny—just 20 seats—& tightly spaced with intelligent service. While a bar at heart it has a menu big enough to make a meal out of it. The first thing you’ll notice in the otherwise minimalist concrete, glass & timber space, are the chopstick rests… #food

Having a breakfast standard—mine is currently chilli eggs—is an easy way to benchmark cafes. The Berry General Store makes a mean chilli eggs ($21) using Umami Papi, the same crunchy chilli oil we use at home. #food

Grey storm clouds, shafts of golden evening light, & sweltering humidity saw a flying termite swarm herald our arrival to The Berry Hotel. Lured in by a voucher from The Berry View Motel promising 2-meals-for-$35, we’re disappointed to find it eliminates most of the menu, bar for pub classics. #food

Salwa’s Garden feels like the last hold-out in a railway suburb that has begun its inevitable upward climb. The 1913 cottage and its well-tended and colourful garden, is sandwiched between two multi-storey blocks, opposite Oatley Park, which itself dates back to 1888. #food

A side quest into Rooty Hill on the way back from Penrith Regional Gallery saw us dine at Qabuli House. You’ll find it at the railway station end of the suburb’s little shopping strip: just look for the metal shelves bearing Afghan and Arabic breads. #food

As we make our way through to our table through Jane Surry Hills’ happy hour crowd, we’re recommended the flatbread ($14), “but only if you’re on statins”. Stuffed with spinach, leek and Cheddar, it sounds temptingly rich. We had our hearts set on the set menu ($95/head), or I would have… #food

A bevy of women clad in yellow-strapped denim aprons gaze at me expectantly. The front of house team at the family-run Slowbreads in Roseville, led by Rychelle Kiely, is certainly eager to please. My order passes through at least 4 pairs of hands. While the cumquat snail ($6.50) was sold out… #food

On the sleepier side of Hurlstone Park station, you’ll find a new–old pizzeria called Frankly Nick's. While the vibe feels old fashioned, the flaming Forni Valoriani pizza oven feels contemporary, with lights, timers, and your pizza circulating on a rotating stone. #food

After the longest soft opening I’ve ever seen, Saigon Things is set to have its grand opening on Saturday 8 November. The brightly lit and colourfully decorated Strathfield restaurant gives you a picture of what people in the former Saigon—Ho Chi Min City—are eating right now. #food

Some restaurants leave you feeling warmly toward them. Tumbling out of a tiny, hole-in-the-wall on Liverpool Street in Darlinghurst, Nomidokoro Indigo is one such place. We stumbled upon this small collection of mismatched tables set under a retractable canvas awning a few weeks back. #food

“Of course, that is a ridiculous argument. It’s just as ridiculous as pointing out that @sussanley.bsky.social deliberately changed her name to create an SS in the middle of her given name.” #auspol

No Joy, only Division: It's just the stupidest stupid we've yet seen
A self-processed former "punk" using her position to criticise the PM for wearing a Joy Division T-shirt is stupid-stupid, even for Auspol.

Recreating the glowing briefcase scene from Pulp Fiction, a white-gloved waiter opens a suitcase to reveal a backlit collection of sake cups. It’s just one way Oborozuki endeavours to make your night special. Another way is with high staffing ratios… #food

Warm currents seem to have extended the bluefin tuna season in NSW, which normally runs from June to September. Chef Rio Chun Man Lau is taking full advantage of this at Gou Sushi with good value bluefin tuna sets ($28). #food

With only its breeze block bar visible at the rear of one of Central Park’s residential towers, Hongdae Pocha BBQ is not the easiest spot to locate. It makes up for the discretion on the outside with flashy neon, pulsating tunes, and convivial chatter, within. #food

Craven, ill-advised and now repeatedly wedged, it's too late for Ley
If there remains who believes Sussan Ley can pull the Liberal Party out of its dissent into the political abyss, please raise your hand.

For a neighbourhood restaurant that gets it right, head to the gloriously red and golden Attenzione in Redfern. All sex aside, their grilled pastrami ($28) is going to be the best tongue ever inserted into your mouth. The dish has remained on the menu since they opened for good reason. #food

Sippenham is geared toward Sydenham locals. They’re young (the average age is 25–39), they’re mortgaged up (the median house price is $1.6 million & 66% of people own), and too busy renovating to cook lasagne. Viewed in this light, I can see why the beef shin lasagne ($34) is popular… #food

Wan’s Cantonese is part of the cluster of new upmarket Chinese restaurants that have popped up in the last year. You might recognise its architectural bones from previous reviews for Soi 25, Appethai, & Spice I Am. It’s the first time in my memory this Darlinghurst spot has been Cantonese. #food

Baking 101 is new to Stanmore. It has a glitzy look but with oddly chosen burgundy reminiscent of mainstream outlets like Michels Patisserie & Bakers Delight. The darkly baked range didn’t look particularly appealing so I just walked away with an (only slightly overcooked) cheese twist ($7)… #food

After trying the mortadella at Hey Rosey, I was prompted to revisit Cured Orange. Former Sydneysider, Stefan Birmili, opened this tiny purveyor of artisan handcrafted cured meats in Orange in 2018. On this visit we picked up cheese kransky, chilli pancetta, mortadella, & house cured bacon. #food
