Recent scholarship suggests the Milky Way was represented in Ancient Egypt as early as 1077–943 BCE. The sky goddess, Nut, was sometimes depicted with an “undulating black curve,” thought to symbolize the Great Rift, a ribbon of dark space that divides the Milky Way.
