As Lake Superior warms, it's growing greenish clouds of blue-green algae, which is actually a bacteria. One researcher is tracking it himself, saying authorities aren't acting fast enough to educate the public about preventing blooms and avoiding their dangers. thenarwhal.ca/lake-superio...
Lake Superior has algae blooms, too | The Narwhal
Long a threat to southern Ontario lakes, climate change is making even the coldest of the Great Lakes home for cyanobacteria — or blue-green algae

*Prince of the Forest*

One of my favourite captures from adventures on the Sibley Peninsula, near Thunder Bay (Ontario). I’ve had the pleasure of photographing this individual a few times and he is always so photogenic.

Does A Bear 💩 In The Woods?

A young polar bear does its "business" after a morning of eating berries. This cub/yearling, approximately 2.5 years old, will likely spend only a few more months with its mother before heading off on its own.

After spending 1-5 years “at sea”, Chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) will return to their rivers and spawn. During this process, females will deposits thousands of eggs in gravels nests, while the males fertilize the deposits. Death for both, unfortunately, follows shortly after.

Male polar bears like this can grow up to 1,300 lbs (600kg) and stand nearly 10 feet tall. These massive animals are beginning to migrate onto the ice of the Hudson Bay, where they’ll spend the winter hunting for seals.

As a kid, I always loved watching shark documentaries produced by the folks at the National Geographic. One series in particular, focused on a species commonly found in Canadian waters: The Blue Shark. Fitting that my first encounter with a shark would be this amazing species.

The Struggle

Every October polar bears congregate near Churchill, MB, to begin their winter journey onto the sea-ice to hunt seals. Bears who struggle to maintain their weight during the winter and spring, are at disadvantage in the fall when the ice begins to form.

Weekend Rituals

As the morning forest turns to noon, the sounds of songbirds are replaced by the rattling noise of idling vehicles. To us, the sounds of engines represent power and modernity. To the deer on Mission Island, however, the sounds represent a future meal.
