Geologist. Mostly Quaternary. Earthquakes, landscapes, and whatever else looks interesting.
This sums up well the feeling I get from watching the destruction of the scientific enterprise in the U.S. The downstream effects of this will be the loss of a generation of scientists.
I am thinking a lot today about how heavy things feel in my world of faculty doing scientific research. There's the immediate chaos and panic about our ability to pay people and continue our research. But there's also a deeper grief at watching everything get bulldozed for no reason

Grants cancelled. Centers defunded. What more wrecking will there be? The war on science is getting grim.

If you haven’t heard of canary mission yet, search for it and check if your name or your friends are listed, then ask yourself about the future of dissent in America.

I love geologic maps. Here are some old Soviet CCCP era geologic maps. In the global pursuit of natural resources, geology was essential. In the US, we have lost most of our talent in mineral resources due in part to over specialization. Geologic maps are where one begins…

I fondly recall Altadena as a diverse, bucolic neighborhood. I hope it rebuilds with that same energy.

I never imagined the Altadena neighborhood I once lived in could be gone this way. Feeling sad for all the loss. No doubt involving people I know. I hope they are ok.

As if Elsevier needed more reasons for academics to publish elsewhere.
Editor Tip (For Elsevier Journals): About 5 years ago, Elsevier killed all of the journal email addresses. gca@elsevier.com now goes to "Research Support" staff that cover 4000 journals. They mess up a lot, editors get maybe 50% of intended messages. If you feel ignored, google us, then email us.

InSAR is magic!
Magical INSAR led us to rupture from the M5.8 Parker Butte Nevada earthquake. 1.5 km of surface rupture, right lateral, max offsets 2-5 cm, on NNW plane. Conjugate to NE trending aftershocks.

Is anyone putting out an onshore seismometer array near the Cape Mendocino EQ? Do they need help from enthusiastic students? Great opportunity to improve imaging of a complicated place.

In the field this week working on the transition from soil-mantled to emergence of core stones. Or how to make potato-boulder landscapes like this:
