Jerry Pruitt was Canada’s oldest jockey, retiring at 66 after a legendary career.

His wife, Lise, is a top trainer at Assiniboia Downs.

Now their 22-year-old daughter Ciera is blazing her own trail as a rookie rider at her hometown track.

Racing in her blood: Rookie Manitoba jockey knows she has ‘big shoes to fill’ as she follows in dad’s footsteps
Ciera Pruitt had pictured the scene since she was a little girl running wild on the grounds of Assiniboia Downs — her backyard, really — while her parents were hard at work nearby. Back then, she was...

Make it 9 straight losses for the #NHLJets — and 22 in last 28 — following a 4-2 stinker in Ottawa.

Now 15-21-4 through 40 games. Dead last in NHL.

Fun fact: Winnipeg needs to go 41-1-0 in final 42 to match last year’s record.

Next: Changes???

5-game homestand starts Tuesday.

Yep, this pretty much sums it up for the #NHLJets.

Fresh off being named to the U.S Olympic team, Kyle Connor scores his 19th of the year to cut the #NHLJets deficit to 3-2 with 9:50 left in the 3rd.

Logan Stanley drills Brady Tkachuk with a right hook and gets 4 minutes in penalties as a result. Tkachuk gets a 10 minute misconduct for seemingly wanting to fight every member of the #NHLJets.

After a decent first period, the #NHLJets are an utter disaster so far in the middle frame.

So it goes for an extremely fragile group, where one mistake quickly becomes multiple blunders in the blink of an eye.
January 4, 2026 at 1:25 AM
Dylan DeMelo, who leads the #NHLJets in minor penalties, takes another one.

Ottawa scores on the ensuing power play.

1-1.

The captain is on the board. A shorthanded breakaway beauty from Adam Lowry gives the #NHLJets a 1-0 lead in Ottawa. Terrific bank pass by Kyle Connor.

#NHLJets coach Scott Arniel tells colleague @wiebesworld.bsky.social that Nino Niederreiter was a healthy scratch tonight in Toronto.

Mark Scheifele: "There’s so many great hockey players, so many great guys. It’s an honour to be a part of this country. I obviously wish I was picked. But God’s got a plan and I’ve just go to trust it.”

Says "I don't know what else I could have done," feels he's playing "best hockey of my career."
Speaking with colleague @wiebesworld.bsky.social in Toronto -- no other Winnipeg media is on the #NHLJets trip -- Mark Scheifele calls Wednesday "a pretty a dark day" after learning he wasn't selected to Canadian Olympic team.

Confirms he's remaining in testing protocol on stand-by list.

I’m not sure how the #NHLJets recover from that.

The gut punch of all gut punches.

8 straight losses (0-5-3).

21 of past 27 (6-17-4).

Dead last in league. 15-20-4 overall.

Next: @ Ottawa Saturday.

OMG Comrie.
January 2, 2026 at 2:24 AM
That was an Olympic-style snipe by Mark Scheifele, who now has 2 goals and 1 assist tonight in Toronto.

More importantly for the #NHLJets, they have their lead back.
January 2, 2026 at 2:16 AM
It was 4-1.
January 2, 2026 at 2:11 AM
Connor Hellebuyck must be wondering where this run support has been lately.
January 2, 2026 at 1:21 AM
New year, new #NHLJets?

Who are these guys and where have they been?
January 2, 2026 at 1:13 AM
Points in 3 of the past 4 games now for #NHLJets forward Jonathan Toews.
January 2, 2026 at 1:12 AM
Nice start for the #NHLJets, as a pair of Ontario products — Gabe Vilardi and Dylan DeMelo — give the desperate visitors an early 2-0 lead in Toronto.
January 2, 2026 at 12:43 AM
#NHLJets lose 2-1 in Detroit — a 7th straight setback (0-4-3) and 20th defeat in past 26 outings (6-16-4).

Lack of offence remains a massive issue.

They will enter 2026 dead last in the NHL with a 15-19-4 record.

Up next: @ Toronto on Thursday.

Happy New Year, folks.
January 1, 2026 at 2:08 AM
Notable Team Canada snub Logan Stanley scores his 7th goal of the season as the #NHLJets cut the deficit to 2-1 with just under 13 minutes remaining in the third.

Stanley now tied with Morgan Barron for 4th in team goal scoring.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

The #NHLJets — the reigning Presidents’ Trophy winners — head into the final day of 2025 all alone in the NHL’s basement.

With each passing game — and each mounting loss — the biggest question surrounding the #NHLJets grows louder:

At what point will enough be enough?

My column following Monday’s 3-1 defeat to Edmonton — their 19th setback in the last 25 games.
