This #VeteransDay, EJI acknowledges the plight of many Black veterans who, instead of being treated as honored members of society upon their return from service, were often attacked, lynched, mistreated and abused.

If #Florida follows through on these capital sentences, it will extend its own record from this year for executions in the state. As Death Penalty Information Center found, veterans made up ⅓ of the executions carried out in 2025.

We must do better on #VeteransDay and beyond.
Here are just some of the down stream effects of not supporting the health and wellness of service members.

A new report from the Death Penalty Information Center reveals that veterans represent 1/3 of the executions in Florida this year.

From the Tuskegee Airmen to the Six Triple Eight, Black veterans have made vital and often overlooked contributions to this country's history.

This Veterans Day, we honor the courage, resilience, and service of Black veterans that has undoubtedly helped shape the U.S.

Today we honor the people who served our country. But for too many veterans, the fight for stability continues long after they return home.

Honoring veterans means making sure they have a safe place to live and a fair chance to succeed.

We honor veterans’ service, but too often overlook them when their invisible wounds lead to the justice system. In @starsandstripes.bsky.social, CCJ Veterans Justice Commission Director David “Mac” MacEwen shares how government can better support them: www.stripes.com/opinion/2025...
We thank veterans for their service. Why don’t we support them when they stumble?
We’ve seen encouraging signs our government is prioritizing veterans who stumble, but more is needed, says David MacEwen, a retired brigadier general.

While we are told to "support the troops," we do the opposite in practice.
👉 Recent veterans are 2x more likely to face incarceration

It's hard to pinpoint exactly why this may be, but research shows that combat exposure can be associated with physical & mental health problems, and this can lead to a greater likelihood of arrest & incarceration.

An #ElectionDay reminder: 4 million people in the U.S. have been stripped of their right to vote due to a felony conviction.

Is that what democracy is supposed to look like?

November marks #NationalHomelessnessAwarenessMonth. In #Miami, Alvah Chapman took seriously his role in reducing chronic homelessness in the community.

#ElectionDay is here. In #Florida, people with felony convictions are now able to check their voter eligibility.

@fji-law.bsky.social attorneys helped write the language in #Amendment4 (2018) to make it possible. Thanks to our colleagues at @flrightsrestore.bsky.social for their continued advocacy.
FJI helped craft the language for the ballot initiative that passed and restored voting rights to people with non-violent felonies on their record.

Only now is the state making it easier to know if you can vote, thanks to The Florida Rights Restoration Coalition.

🧵 (1/2) Yesterday, I did something I don't often get to do: Take a walk. While I explored, I encountered this sign in front of a local house of worship.

As someone who grew up in the church, I found it especially poignant for the current environment. A powerful reminder for this very moment.

As the government shutdown looms, it's up to the community to deliver for those who need it most.

And, when we come together, positive change happens. Thank you to my counterpart at Miami Homes for All, Annie Lord, and her team for reminding everyone that it's up to us to create #TheFutureWeBuild.
