my wife misread my copy of the first book and refers to it as "Dr. Sam: Johnson Detector"

okay, one more that's out of your time range - Lillian de la Torre wrote a large series of detective stories that took the "Johnson-Boswell" relationship of Holmes and Watson and just made Samuel Johnson a detective. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lillian...

this doesn't fit your recency requirement but:
"Dutch diplomat attached to Chaing' people during WW2 translates a Chinese 18th century detective novel, then writes his fan continuation of the series for another 18 books" is a fun story.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roma_Su... I've only grown more interested in the Roman Sub Rosa series after learning that the author's other professional life was writing gay erotica (some of it set in Rome) in the 80s and 90s

you know what big organization famously used non-carceral solutions to deal with pedophiles, unless backed into it by circumstance? its current head is a guy from Chicago who lives in Rome!

The Church of the United Brethren, w/roots in German Anabaptism and American Methodism, was a radical anti-slavery church - its 'political' nature being what had attracted a young Milton to it years earlier.

you can safely assume that Black Charley looked how you think he looked. I wish I knew what he and Milton talked about. (If you're wondering about the spelling, Milton uses it freely for Charleys of all races in the diary.)

I went in the afternoon to Miles Conway's, and lodged there. The next morning, I had a talk with Black Charley on religion.

I was scrolling down this, embarrassed I couldn't think of a movie my late father loved, then I remembered watching this with him (he was a lifelong teacher and almost wept at the end). Thank you!

Oh yeah - the fact that Newsom is the worst the Dems could plausibly do is good news!
February 3, 2026 at 8:33 PM
I worry a bit about what might happen under a Newsom Presidency, but -

A. he's not POTUS yet - not even the nominee.
B. if he becomes the nominee, it's our job to teach him the error of his ways.

a lot of famous 20th century mystics - Edgar Cayce, Jeane Dixon, etc identified strongly with various factions of Christianity. (not to mention those of previous generations) even as Catholic a book as THE EXORCIST has a sympathetic psychic character.
