What can last month’s AI Action Summit tell us about the future of multilateralism? The road ahead is tough, but not all hope is lost. My take: look at what small states and middle powers will do.

“You are arguing with an economist!”

Like that should ever stop anybody from questioning the validity of anyone’s arguments?

If I ever become so arrogant that I assert that any of my policy arguments are foolproof by virtue of my profession, my family should put me in a home!

In my first piece for Fulcrum: while Philippine AI governance is currently stuck in neutral, it is not too late to shift gears towards a more robust policy.

I slightly disagree with the take to focus on negotiating lower tariffs. While it’s going to be useful, I don’t think Trump is going to budge anytime soon.

Better focus on (a) building trade relationships with other partners and (b) inviting MNCs to reshore production in 🇵🇭

#TodayinHistory in 1986, the EDSA People Power Revolution triumphed. Dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. lost control of the Philippine military. Corazon C. Aquino was sworn in as 11th President of the Philippines. By 9:25 PM, the Marcos family had fled to Hawaii.

4/10 ASEAN members 🇰🇭🇮🇩🇸🇬🇹🇭 signed the AI Action Summit’s Declaration on inclusive AI.

Disappointed 🇵🇭 skipped this one. As we have no national AI governance blueprint, we have nothing to share at the int’l level.

As I said before, inaction is costing us leverage.

NEDA just published a Policy Note on AI.

I agree we need a concrete governance direction. We don’t have national AI guidelines yet and house bills are stuck in committee.

Every sector is waiting how we’ll tackle AI ethics issues. Gov’t needs to move fast. neda.gov.ph/policy-note-...

Int’l outlets reporting on yesterday’s events described that Filipino congressmen have “endorsed” or “moved forward” with the VP’s impeachment.

I think that’s a bit misleading. The most appropriate description is: Sara Duterte has been impeached.

The Philippine Senate is set to preside over an impeachment trial in the middle of the official campaign period for the 2025 midterm election.

What could possibly go wrong?

All election debates/townhalls must be broadcast LIVE.

Also, don’t want to do it? Ok then, 50 cents per voter slashed from your allowable campaign expense per no-show.

Sputnik moment? Sputnik was the world's first manmade satellite. DeepSeek is NOT the world's first LLM.

Besides, anybody in the US who was thinking that China will never get to develop its own LLM at a similar pace vs. OpenAI/Google/Meta/Anthropic is, frankly, deluded.

I always hear about how the general public in the region has little to no knowledge about ASEAN and how that needs to be improved. Then again, the general public is not the one being vetted to run the Pentagon.
Duckworth: How many nations are in ASEAN?

Hegseth: We have allies in South Korea, Japan, and Australia

Duckworth: None of those countries are in ASEAN
