WHY SAILORS WERE PROLIFICT IN EARLY 20TH-C. HOMOEROTIC ART: Sailors existed outside domestic heterosexual norms, constant travel & anonymity in ports suggested sexual freedom. For gay artists, this imagery offered a framework for desire between men, free from marriage & scrutiny.

Portrait of Charles Beach dressed in a naval uniform by J. C. Leyendecker. Beach & Leyendecker were long-time partners which they kept secret from the public even thought they lived together. Beach was often a model for Leyendecker’s work as a prominent commercial artist for advertizing and magazine covers. Paul Cadmus's "The Fleet's In!" (1934), depicts a group of sailors on shore leave in NYC engaged in various forms of debauchery & interacting with civilians, including those from the gay community. The work, commissioned by the government's Public Art Project sparked significant national controversy and was banned from display in national museums. “Sailors and Floozies” (1938) by Paul Cadmus depicts sailors on shore leave in Riverside Park NYC. He painted it in direct response to the controversy over his painting “The Fleet’s In!” which resulted in it being banned by the U.S. government & military. Paul Cadmus’s “Jerry” (1931) portrays one of the artist’s lovers, a sailor, captured with quiet intimacy and sensual ease. The painting is notable for its unapologetic homoeroticism at a time when such imagery was rarely shown openly. The inclusion of “Ulysses”, a modernist novel once banned for obscenity, adds a subtle layer of sexual and intellectual defiance.
