My pepper plants do not look well but they gave up another harvest. Probably their last. We have not had a frost here yet. It’s rare to be this deep in November and not have a frost.

The new Armand Hammer is an incredible album. Here’s an excellent write up by @gardenerjams.bsky.social in pitchfork. The words do the album justice!

8.9/10 in my book

Next up, jaimie branch’s Fly or Die Live. Jaimie was an incredible innovator and improviser. It really shines on this album.

BTW, International Anthem just announced a special reissue of Fly or Die II. Very excited for that

I’m holed up sick, but music is the healing force of the universe, so I’m spinning lots of music to get better.

First up, Ruler Rebel by Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah.

The first in the centennial trilogy. Taking the next step in his stretch music philosophy.

New Tortoise arriving just in time for the mood boost I really needed! The blue ‘seamount axial’ vinyl is even better than it looked online. Another gem from Tortoise and IARC

Travels took me through Phoenix, so I stopped at @stinkweeds.com and the In Groove, two of my fave record shops in the country. Picked up some gems from Low, Charles Tolliver, Angel Bat Dawid, Marc Johnson, and Morton Subotnick.

@intlanthem.bsky.social has their own section at Stinkweeds now!

Shoutout @gardenerjams.bsky.social for this excellent review and for clueing me into this beautiful album by Flur, the London trio that “fuses composition and improvisation in a vaporous, polyrhythmic style somewhere between astral jazz and cosmic minimalism”.

Seeing all these semi trucks jamming up the road, burning a bunch of fuel makes me wonder if there’s a better way to transport cargo? Like maybe a single truck could pull a bunch of the cargo containers?

And since there’s so many of them, maybe give them their own road.

To celebrate the announcement of Mercy — the new collaborative album from Armand Hammer and the Alchemist — I am spinning my pride and joy. My deluxe edition of Haram with an alternate cover (thankfully)

Here’s how summer 2025 has gone in New Mexico. In Albuquerque, the Rio Grande is entirely dry in spots. In the Sandia Mtns, the east slope — the side that gets the most rain — has acres of dry, dead/ dying pine trees.

Maybe I’m old fashioned, but this doesn’t seem good.

I recently did some field work for the 1st time in >10 years. It wasn’t atmospheric chem field work like you’d expect, tho.

My group was tapped to assess risk after an accidental lab explosion. Wrote up what we did & lessons learned.

Consider using it in teaching…

I am sooo happy with how the Flow soundtrack vinyl turned out. Well worth the 5 month wait. The wax is beautiful. The styling on the sleeves is cleverly done (you can change the cat eyes by rotating the inner sleeves). Nice touches all around. This is epitomizes the appeal of vinyl. Via Mondo.

Amazing album! The obi strip description is perfect and says it better than I can. “Tellurian psychedelic fantasia of old familiar folklore and avant-garde blues seduces and inoculates with the irreverence and joy of free music”.

The only thing better than coming home from work travel is coming home to a stack of new LPs and getting to hear the new Ben LaMar Gay and Defcee/ Parallel Thought albums before their release dates.

It is gonna be an @intlanthem.bsky.social summer. Horizons and Yowzers are perfect summer albums

ASMS has an exhibit on Dragonfly, the planned mission to Titan. A cool example of using mass spectrometry to interrogate other worlds, hopefully shedding light on origins of life +. Dragonfly will be one of the coolest things to happen in my lifetime.

cc @planetdr.bsky.social made me think of you!

I am in Baltimore for the ASMS conference, so of course I had to stop in for an Orioles game! Beautiful ballpark

New arrival:
Aesop Rock - Black Hole Superette

It’s up there with his best work ever (Labor Days, Impossible Kid) and the limited edition vinyl is crazy. I don’t think I’ll have the nerve to break open the door on the cover for a few years, tho…

Wildfire smoke is decimating our otherwise immaculate air quality here in New Mexico. On the left is a typical view of the mountains from my home. On the right is the view from a few minutes ago. And it’s actually improved since this morning!

This used to be rare, but it happens a lot now.

Swans - Birthing

This may be the best Swans yet. There isn’t a single song that reaches the highs of, say, Apostate or Bring the Sun/ Toussaint L’Ouverture, but the entire album is so consistently exceptional in a way no other Swans is. There is no low point here.
