The authors of these texts were very motivated to denounce the movement as (1)"...the tlatol of the devil..." so it should be taken skeptically on the matter of threats of violence and satanic worship.

For more reading I suggest one of my sources, Contesting Conquest, by Ida Altman.

According to the same text the threat of violence was apart of the spreading of the 'Tlatol'

(1)"...and if they did not do so, they would come to their towns and destroy them..."

while the text if very clear about this it should be understood critically.

A key part of the 'Tlatol' was the rejection of Christianity.

(1) "...persuading them to renounce the faith(Christianity)...", (1) "...and to idolize and no longer serve the Christians, because they were soon to kill them all..."

It is clear from the text that Christendom was the enemy.

"...and that they had no need to sow, because corn and other seeds would grow on their own..."

These were promised to the followers of the 'Tlatol'. The god sources claimed were behind the 'Tlatol' was (2)'Tecocoli', Which is probably a local version of the word "Tecolotl" which means owl.

"...the Indians believe that their grandparents and all their ancestors had risen from the dead, and that they were to kill all the Christians who were in that province, and after killing them, they would go to Mexico and subjugate it..."

The 'Tlatol' Promised that:
1. Their Ancestors would/have resurrected (sources conflict)
2. They would kill the Christians and take the valley of Mexico
3. They wouldn't need to sow seeds as the crops would grow by themselves.

"...if they know, etc., believe, saw, or heard it said that it may have been about six years, more or less, since certain sorcerer Indians from the sierras and Zacatecas came to the towns of Taltenango and Juchipila and others in New Galicia, and they subverted and deceived the said towns..."

While the material causes of the war are well understood the social aspect is more complicated and revolve around the 'Tlatol'. The 'Tlatol' was reportedly spread from town to town by a oral tradition, which is most likely what Tlatol refers to as Tlatol is formed from the Nahuatl word 'Tlatolli"

Not a whole lot is known about Tenamaxtli for certain but his role as a coordinator of the war is well known. He was the Tlatoani of Nochistlan and considered himself the rightful lord of Xalisco, the name of the region of Jalisco and Nayarit and the western parts of Zacatecas.

His actions are sometimes compared to the Holocaust. and he was later tried and arrested in Spain for his crimes.

One can hardly considered the Mixton rebel's attacks as starting the war in this context. The military leader of the rebellion was a Caxcan named Tenamaxtli or Francisco Tenamaztle.

The Spanish side consisted of the Spanish themselves and their native allies including the Purepecha, Tlaxcalteca, and others.

The war was motivated by the atrocious genocidal actions of Nuño de Guzmán. His actions, while I wont cover all of it here are considered beyond despicable.

The Mixton War happened between 1540 and 1542 in modern states of Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Nayarit. It was one of largest wars during the colonial period in Mexico. The native side consisted of the indigenous Caxcanes, Tecuexes, Zacatecos, and other Chichimec and dispersed peoples in the region.

In this thread I am going to cover the 'Tlatol', a religio-political movement often cited as contributing factor in the Mixton War.

Firstly I'll give a quick background on the Mixton War and it's causes.
