Whatever the final result of Honduras's election, it's clear that the Cuba/Venezuela axis has lost another ally following the defeat of Arce in Bolivia in August and Ralph Gonsalves in St Vincent last month. Further proof of Latin America's swing to the right.

One thing I did not get to mention in this piece is that Rob Jetten is extremely physically fit. If he becomes Prime Minister he will probably be the most physically fit European leader apart from maybe Alexander Stubb

Portugal's local elections show the hard-right wave in Europe is not unstoppable, with Chega doing poorly (it won only three municipalities) and the governing centre-right and opposition Socialists polling strongly.

Peru: looks like at last the Congress is going to impeach Dina Boluarte, the most incompetent president the country has had in a very long time. The question is whether anyone better will replace her.

Adiós Mario Vargas Llosa, a great Peruvian man of letters. He will be remembered above all for half a dozen great novels, especially "Conversación en la Catedral". Whatever one thought of his political commitments, he became a kind of super-ego for Latin America. He will be missed. RIP.

Trump’s upcoming tariff barrage will hold back U.S.-based exporters and the growth they can bring. In my latest for @opinion.bloomberg.com, I argue that the U.S. should shift its focus from cutting imports to the other side of the trade equation and boost exports.
Tariffs Will Destroy the Best Cure for the Trade Deficit
US exports not only reduce deficits, they also bring higher-paying jobs and greater innovation. A tariff-driven trade war will hold back their growth.
