I played a lot of games this year (Steam says I played 85!) and here are three stand-out games you might not have heard of, roughly in order of preference. (Thread)

Another example of how the perpetrators of the Aussie #SocialMediaBan are failing our kids, by telling them to "read that book" (code for "just go back to the old ways"), forgetting that kids find books, and so many other "real world" things, on social media.

Teens discover books on social media. What will the under-16s ban do to their reading?
Social media communities on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube have encouraged teens to read for fun. Now, Australian teens are banned from them until they turn 16.

Can't stop thinking in awe of Ahmed Al Ahmed, the guy who tackled the gunman at Bondi yesterday. An absolute legend, and all the more profound that he is a Syrian immigrant who saved Jewish victims. Wishing him a full recovery. ❤️

I'm hearing a lot (including from the pro-social-media-ban folks) that "now we've banned _bad_ social media, we need to build some safe spaces for kids online, to fill the void". Problem: That isn't legal. This rushed law bans any service that lets users communicate, not just "bad ones". Disaster.

I've been playtesting this and it's got a very cool 90s vibe #iykyk. Looking forward to more adventures with Pinny.
I've just launched the demo for my new game Factory 95! It's a retro-Windows inspired automation game about making PowerPoints. You can play it here: store.steampowered.com/app/3987250/...

So it begins... Bluesky proactively complying with Australian social media ban. I wonder how much personal ID I have to give to continue using this service.
December 9, 2025 at 12:23 PM
I think the worst thing about Australia's #SocialMediaBan (and there are a lot of bad things) is that it doesn't give tech companies (even future ones) the ability to behave well, because it doesn't punish bad behaviour, it just bans all "social media" (as judged randomly by the commissioner). 🧵 1/5

Unfortunately these kids are confusing "I don't want this" with "nobody should have this".

You shouldn't support a govt. ban of something that you don't like. Next they could ban something you like that I don't. Not a path we should go down.

Patrick, 15, does not use social media and hopes he never does. Nick, 15, had a flip phone for the first few years of high school. Here is why they support the social media ban.

Just hit possibly the most egregious "let's finish setting up your PC" for my 3-year-old Windows 11 PC... an unskippable nightmare of ads for services that I had to carefully decline in a different way for each one, some requiring multiple denials. In total, 13 clicks to get back to using my PC.

The problem with all streaming services: more competition is bad for consumers because it means more subscriptions, so they can argue consolidation is "pro-consumer". But consolidation is also bad for consumers for the traditional reasons monopolies are bad. So we can't win.

So it seems that it has now become the Australian government's policy that no content unsuitable for an eight year old should appear on any website unless the user creates an account.

This is beyond ridiculous.

Australia just made it illegal for YouTube to provide safe age-appropriate content and parental controls. They didn't ban kids from YouTube, just gutted all the child safety features. Parents, do you feel your kids are safe online now?

Perfect: Aus government forces tech companies to rush to implement age verification or face massive fines, but doesn't offer any systems or regulations, simply "they have to figure it out." Then the inevitable privacy nightmare is their fault.
