I do think there have been efforts to regulate.
Thinks like ownership of your own likeness, making it illegal to spread nude pictures (in Aus for under-18s caused trouble), changing of libel and defamation laws to include social media
February 4, 2026 at 12:17 PM
It's new, and we are still learning the harms, how do we maximise the benefits and lower the harms? Until we know this, banning is a good stop gap IMO.
February 4, 2026 at 12:16 PM
But the thing with social media, is it's not a newspaper that you can regulate the content as easily... It's a mass of unqualified opinions with little consequence.
February 4, 2026 at 12:16 PM
Things like tax and emotional guilt-tripping (graphic ads) helped the low-socioeconomic status groups.
Banning social media during childhood allows to instill the values and critical thinking a society wants from its citizens away from outside propaganda.
February 4, 2026 at 12:16 PM
Yes, to use the same analogy, old, poor, & sick people are vulnerable to the addictive effects of cigarettes... but the nature of banning it for children along with education of the harms during those formative years has helped those (future) vulnerable people (mostly through social stigma)
February 4, 2026 at 12:16 PM
But it depends what lens you look at it. If you view social media as an addictive substance... Then you can compare the effectiveness of banning cigarettes for under 18's on public health... Which was effective... There are other lenses to view the issue of course...

I think they tried regulating the platforms and that didn't work. This is plan B (or C or D or E) until they can get plan A to work again.
I don't know about you... But I highly doubt I could convince the likes of Elon, Bezos etc. to kowtow to a little island nations wishes...

I don't get it.
