And that brings us to one of the biggest problems with this topic, as a whole-people expect one blanket and grand explanation for the entire UFO mystery to one day emerge. This is flawed thinking at its core. This issue is clearly one with multiple explanations due to the wide range of events that have occurred under a huge number of circumstances. This thinking must be changed as it limits our ability to solve some mysteries in the hopes of coming up with some fantastical monolithic explanation for every related mystery. So, accepting that there is likely a wide array of explanations to this notoriously abused topic will be absolutely key to successfully studying it and destigmatizing it in our culture, and especially within U.S. military and intelligence circles.

Within three years, the Pentagon's non-lethal weapons lab hopes to have a direct energy weapon that can produce an effect like a haunted walkie-talkie or the biblical burning bush. Watch the video above and listen carefully for what sounds like a human voice during the second spin. That's not an audio recording or a broadcast transmitted over radio...it's not human at all. It's an auditory effect that's created by military scientists who manipulated the air with lasers — and it's the Pentagon's most interesting idea for stopping people charging checkpoints, or just scaring the crap out of them. The U.S. military's Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Program, or JNLWD, is inching closer to a weapon that alters atoms to literally create words from thin air. It's called the Laser-Induced Plasma Effect and, fingers crossed, they hope to be able to say intelligible words within the next three years. The weapon is composed of two parts: first, a femtosecond laser, which shoots a burst of focused light for 10-15 seconds, just long enough to rip the electrons from air molecules and create a ball of plasma. (Sometimes called the fourth state of matter, plasma is a field of electrified gas, highly responsive to electromagnetic effects.) The scientists then hit that plasma field with a second nanolaser, tuned to an extremely narrow range of wavelengths. They use that to manipulate the plasma field in a way that can produce light and noise. Get the interaction precise enough and you get something that sounds like a haunted walkie-talkie. "We're this close to getting it to speak to us. I need three or four more kilohertz," says David Law, who runs JNLWD's technology division. Ultimately, he wants a single system that can produce multiple effects - noise, light, even heat - and replace a wide variety of non-lethal weapons that the military has been testing. These "laser-induced plasma filaments," as the researchers call them, can be projected over distances of up to hundreds of meters, depending on the "wavelength of light" laser system used. Taking into account the nonlinear properties of the air, depending on the power and parameters of the laser, such a false target will also give radar reflec-tions. Even if the system cannot be fully used to simulate visual images of a real aircraft, it is possible to create visible barriers between the weapon operator and the stealth aircraft, "imi-tating or duplicating themselves, or something weirder", using a laser.

While this does not confirm that scientists were playing with laser fireballs in the sky in the 198os, it suggests that the Voice of God project was not a complete fantasy. So far so strange. What makes it stranger is that by pulsing the lasers they could modulate the crackling sound produced by the plasma to carry coherent speech: in effect, a talking fireball. The idea was that the device would be used for psychological operations, with a seemingly divine voice commanding opponents to flee or surrender. Mullins never succeeded in finding out whether there was any truth behind the rumored experiments. Talking to various scientists he concluded that the Voice of God would be "possible in the lab but very difficult to produce in the sky." One of the most interesting stories in this field was the rumor which New Scientist journalist Justin Mullins heard about a bizarre new weapon supposedly being developed in the New Mexico desert back in the 198os. It was called the Voice of God: "Researchers working with high-power laser weapons discovered that they could create a glowing ball of fire in the sky by crossing the beams of two powerful infrared lasers. The beams were invisible to the naked eye, but where they intersected, their electric fields became so intense that they ripped apart molecules in the air, creating a plasma. By moving the laser beams around the sky, the researchers found they could shift the plasma ball back and forth at very high speed," Mullins wrote in 2000.
