Can't tell if they're serious about sending data centers to space or if it's just a ruse to keep stock valuations buoyant... but either way, servers in space is a Hard Problem(tm).

It's finally happened: hearing a person say "I read it on the internet" about a topic they are not an expert in now generates negative trust in me. The dead internet theory is. The SNR has dropped to 0.

In the Burnout Society, it's easy to forget what we are able to achieve: just listening, it may feel like one stream, but it's simply amazing that dozens of humans can sit there facing each other and execute this master piece.

The rafters aren't even half full.

[...] along with all of its idiosyncratic quirks of overconfidence and mistaken understandings (with massive bandaids applied to mitigate damage).

"That field should be 'script', not 'source'" said the LLM, confidently and mistakenly... imitating one of countless arrogant stack overflow comments.

There's a chapter in the Three Body Problem trilogy where they run into a "monument of an extinct civilization", where the protagonist quizzes the monument and it responds that it is not alive.

Modern LLMs are such a monument of discourse online [...] 1/2

We're doing it. Every day that passes, we're authoritatively answering the question "how could they have let this happen in Germany in the 30s".

The answer is "easily".

Tech bros believe that success is totally merit based (i.e. "there exists a path to dethrone TikTok, and I will own it" - with a total disregard of the basic stats question "out of how many"), and that super intelligence is omnipotence, and that they will earn their right to be kings/gods.

In my ripe old age as a developer, I'm starting to see the various areas of my intellectual life come together: there is a link between the Tech Bros belief that AI is the future path, Michael Sandel's ideas on the toxicity of meritocracy and Varoufakis' views on techno feudalism...

Ignoring his speculation as to the rate of AI progress, super intelligence is not omnipotence. An SAI cannot suddenly vanquish an NP-hard problem like a genie. The TSP exists and will continue to exist no matter how intelligent we get. This is what is meant by "hard".

Musing/rant...

When the Eric Schmidt's of the world make (the now aged like milk) claims that a GAI/SAI can be instructed to "dethrone Tiktok", it makes me realize the people in positions of power are just as unintelligent as ever.

The insanity of what's going on geopolitically, is that no matter how insane it gets, somehow there are people convinced of diametrically opposite viewpoints.

The Overton window isn't moving at all, it is simply stretching ever wider.

Who gives a sh*t about Drake at this point. How can people be thinking that is still relevant is mind blowing...

I follow this guy "casually". His backstory is interesting, but he also has this new goal of becoming a political voice for the next election cycle...

"Musk is best understood as a result, not a cause: that there's a kind of sociopathic billionaire shaped hole in the world" - Cory Doctorow

This is actually a fantastic formulation of an idea that I've had for a long time, which is that Musk is the "neuron activation meme" for society as a whole...

Have been using chatgpt for coding work consistently for months now. I am still not convinced this isn't an elaborate Monty Python Cheese Shop skit... When my questions are sufficiently difficult, the answers are almost designed to waste my time more than anything else.

My contrarian bet (<10% odds) for posterity:

1. modern LLMs as they are architected will prove to be an evolutionary deadend for ASI, although they might yet approach AGI'like properties.

2. Proper AGI in the path of ASI will be *at least* 1 order of magnitude smaller in size than modern LLMs.

I actually feel love for the Jinx character in Arcane. Her and her whole family. What an amazing job everyone on that team has done... I am just awe struck.

The Arcane artwork is absolutely phenomenal.

So... I'm here. And it was easy to get here.

But I gotta ask: how do we know the rate of bot adoption isn't going to outpace the rate of human adoption?
