Don't take writing advice too seriously! Trust yourself and your instincts. Follow what excites you and do what feels right to you. You've got this! #ukteenchat
10. Do you have any writing advice or tips you’d like to share? @megcathwrites.bsky.social #ukteenchat

Something wildly different! Adult creative-non-fiction in verse! (although I'm playing with an idea for a YA as well!) #ukteenchat
9. Can you give us any hints about what you're working on next? @megcathwrites.bsky.social #ukteenchat

Pantser forever! I can't plan at all! I write with no idea what will happen and completely out of order. I'm 100% at the mercy of my mood and whatever pops into my mind. I do pinterest a lot though! #ukteenchat

Mostly I think I'm just more confident! TDB was my second book and I was terrified that my first book had been a total fluke, that I'd fooled everyone, that I wouldn't be able to do it again. Now I have more faith in my writing ability and I know my own style much better! #ukteenchat
7. How has your writing process or style evolved since The Deepest Breath? @megcathwrites.bsky.social #ukteenchat
May 6, 2025 at 7:45 PM
I trust my characters. I write for everyone so I let the characters guide me and I follow what they need! I don't approach the actual writing any differently ☺️ #ukteenchat
6. You’ve written for a range of ages, but The Brightest Star is aimed at middle-grade readers, do you approach it differently than writing for teens or young adults? @megcathwrites.bsky.social #ukteenchat

That you don't need to know everything about yourself to BE yourself. That learning about yourself is a lovely, exciting, fascinating thing. That someone somewhere gets it. That community is a special thing. That you deserve the time, space and grace to learn who you are. ❤️ #ukteenchat
5. This is such a tender and inclusive book, particularly around LGBTQIA+ themes and questions of identity. What message or feeling do you hope young readers take away from Stevie and Andrew’s story? @megcathwrites.bsky.social #ukteenchat

There may or may not be a... hand holding scene! 😮

(it's very sweet and meant the world to me!)

For readers: it's just so accessible. It can seem intimidating but it has rhythm, space and shape that make it so wonderful to read. Also, less words 😆 It's the perfect form for themes like mental health because every word is so deliberate and it gets straight to the heart of the - #ukteenchat
3. The Brightest Star is written in verse, like much of your previous work. What draws you to this format, especially for middle-grade readers? @megcathwrites.bsky.social #ukteenchat
May 6, 2025 at 7:24 PM
The Deepest Breath was adapted by a New York theatre company, Treehouse Shakers. Seeing the play made me so desperate to check in & see how my wee characters were doing! It was so inspiring. I was curious to see how they would handle a new school & new challenges. (Also I missed them!) #ukteenchat
2. What inspired you to return to Stevie’s story and explore the challenges of moving up to secondary school? @megcathwrites.bsky.social #ukteenchat
May 6, 2025 at 7:18 PM
It's a follow-up to my book The Deepest Breath! In this one we follow Stevie, Andy & Chloe as they start secondary school. The girls are super excited to join the Rainbow Club but suddenly Andy starts to distance himself and they don't know why. It's about friendship, anxiety & identity #ukteenchat
1. Could you tell us a little bit about your new book, The Brightest Star? @megcathwrites.bsky.social #ukteenchat

“Buy books of poetry and give them to people.”

(Words intoned by Jericho Brown at an event on Friday, running in my head since then. So now I’m putting them in your head too.)

They don’t even have to like poems, because then you are also giving them “having poetry in your life” which is HUGE.
