But one grave is not touched by any human hand or trampled by any animal; only birds perch on it, and sing at dawn. #FathersAndSons #Turgenev25 #TurgenevsBirds 🧵

The whole house suddenly seemed darker; everyone’s faces looked drawn, and a strange silence reigned. A noisy cockerel was removed from the yard and sent off to the village, unable to understand why he was being treated like this. #FathersAndSons #Turgenev25 #TurgenevsBirds 🧵

Arina Vlasyevna was so overcome, running backward and forward through the house, that Vasily Ivanovich called her a “hen-partridge” - and the stumpy tail of her short jacket really did make her look rather birdlike. #FathersAndSons #Turgenev25 #TurgenevsBirds 🧵

“There! Take a lesson from those two!” “What do you mean?” Asked Arkady. “Why, are you so bad at natural history - have you forgotten that the jackdaw is a most respectable, family-minded bird? An example for you! Goodbye, signor!” #FathersAndSons #Turgenev25 #TurgenevsBirds 🧵

“I believe,” he began again, speaking more urgently now - while above him a chaffinch sang its carefree song among the birch leaves - “I believe that every honest person has a duty to be completely open with those… with the people who… #FathersAndSons #Turgenev25 #TurgenevsBirds 🧵

Neither Arkady nor Katya were talking; he was holding a book half open in his hands, while she picked out the last crumbs of white bread from her basket and scattered the for a little family of sparrows who, with typical weary impertinence, were hopping about and chirruping at her feet.

“What can we do, Vasya? A son is like a piece of you that’s cut free. Like a falcon - he wanted to come, so he flew here to us, and he wanted to go, so he flew away, and you and I are like mushrooms on a tree stump, we sit here side by side and don’t go anywhere. #Turgenev25 #TurgenevsBirds 🧵

Everything was silent, save for the roosters crowing aggressively at one another in the village, making all who heard them feel strangely drowsy and wistful; and somewhere high in the treetops was the incessant plaintive cry of a young hawk. #FathersAndSons #Turgenev25 #TurgenevsBirds 🧵

“Come, come,” objected Vasily Ivanovich with a knowing smile. “I may be on the scrap heap now, but I’ve been around - I can tell a bird by the way it flies.” #FathersAndSons #Turgenev25 #TurgenevsBirds 🧵

Now, Arina Vlasyevna, I hope you’ve satisfied your maternal heart, and you’ll be thinking of giving our dear guests something to satisfy their stomachs. As you know, you can’t be feeding nightingales on fairy tales.

Time (as we know) sometimes flies like a bird, sometimes creeps like a worm; but a person is especially happy when he doesn’t notice whether time is moving fast or slowly.

The swallows flew high in the sky; the wind had dropped; the few bees out late buzzed lazily and sleepily among the lilac blossom. A column of midges hovered motionless above a lonely projecting branch.

Dunyasha enjoyed having a giggle with him. And would cast him meaningful sidelong glances as she scuttled by like a little quail.

Hanging from the ceiling, on a long cord, was a cage with a short-tailed siskin constantly chirping and hopping inside it, making the cage rock and swing and bringing hempseeds pattering down onto the floor.

Father and son were both glad that he had turned up just then. There are some situations that are very moving, and yet one is eager to get them over with as quickly as possible as one can.

#FathersAndSons #Turgenev25 For a blog post I once looked up all the birds that feature in Turgenev’s Fathers and Sons, and their symbolic meaning. I’d like to share my findings in this read-along. Here we go! 🧵

I especially loved the nostalgic last chapter of #SpeakMemory. I actually was in Berlin for a few days during #Nabokov24 and although I didn’t have time to go on a Nabokov hunt, it did add an extra dimension to both the book and the city. Thanks Reem @paperpills10.bsky.social 😘

The famous Kurfürstendamm, where Nabokov’s then 2-year old son Dmitri noisily drove up and down in his toy silver coloured Mercedes race car. #Nabokov24 #SpeakMemory

When Nabokov found out that his father would be fighting in a duel, images of famous literary duels flared up in his imagination; Pushkin, Lermontov, Lenski. #Nabokov24 #SpeakMemory Chapter 9

Oh Colette, I imagine she looked a bit like this. Was she shy or showing off in the park in Paris? #Nabokov24 #SpeakMemory
