I recently learned “Mayhem” was a medieval legal term referring to the criminal action of intentionally maiming another person, particularly so they could not participate in combat.

The word comes from the Anglo-French verb “mahaimer” (to main) and emerged in the 15th century.

The Johnstown Flood on May 31, 1889 was one of the worst disasters in American history.

Swollen by days of rain and decades of mis-management, the South Fork Dam couldn’t hold out and finally gave way, hurling a wall of debris towards Johnstown, PA; killing more than 2200 people.

Annie Edson Taylor went over Niagara Falls in a barrel on 24 Oct 1901.

Widowed, 63, and in desperate need of money, she hoped the never-been-done feat would bring her enough fame to sell her story and autographs to take care of her family.

The Battle of the Somme began 1 July 1916. I created a self-guided tour around the town of Albert, France that can be done in 1-3 days depending how much time you want to spend at each site.

15 April 1912 - Titanic sinks

3rd class gates WERE locked because US Immigration law required 3rd class to be separated throughout the trip but once ‘abandon ship’ was ordered, first class stewards rushed to unlock them and help them get to lifeboats.

The Lewis & Clark Boat House and Museum in St Charles, MO is a great place to learn more about the 1804 expedition to the Pacific & see a full sized keelboat replica. 28 months later the party arrived back in MO and only lost 1 person the whole journey. #history #mdtt #museum #stcharlesmo

George Washington designed an innovative 2-story, 16-sided barn with gaps between the floorboards so mules walking on wheat would stomp the seeds through the slats, speeding up the processing time!

A recreation based on his plans was built at #mountvernon.

The USS South Dakota launched in 1941 and fought in the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942.

Its memorial in Sioux Falls outlines the entire footprint of the ship with artifacts placed as they would have been on board with a great little museum in the center.

The property of George Washington’s beloved #mountvernon was granted to his great-grandfather by King Charles II in 1647.

The name of the estate was chosen by Washington’s half-brother Lawrence in 1743 after his navy commander, Edward Vernon.

St Mary & All Saints, Droxford

Found this lovely lady on a research trip of 13c. female effigies.

She was found buried in a nearby field in 1820, which surely contributed to her excellent condition. The Purbeck marble helped too! Now resting in a #medievalsky church.

Remember the Maine!!

15 Feb 1898, the USS Maine exploded in Havana Harbor, initially blamed on Spain and leading to the Spanish-American war. Memorials can be found all over the US, shown here are the one in Key West, FL and the mast at Arlington National Cemetery, VA.
