They…turned off…National Institutes of Health grants? That’s nearly $50 billion of scientific research.
NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research.

Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

Advent of Code is pretty fun so far! Since I’m trying to learn functional programming, I’m trying to complete as many as possible functional languages. Managed to get at least one day done in #ocaml and #leanlang and starting on day 2!

Yes, that can be super confusing initially. When I first started OCaml it took me a good while to figure out that there are essentially two "dialects" – stdlib and Jane Street. JS did a lot to popularise the language in recent years, and @yminsky.bsky.social et al's "Real World OCaml" is excellent.

So #ocaml has been a great learning experience so far. The community is super helpful and patient with beginners. Question for everyone though, is heavy usage of |> seen out in the wild? I’m using it everywhere I can at the moment.

Update on the weekend of learning #ocaml. I managed to start on a cli for reading Bluesky feeds, but the transition from Python to OCaml is expectedly a bit difficult. Kudos to the OCaml team for the overview doc on the site as that helped a lot to get going. Really enjoying the language though!

After stumbling upon several #ocaml posts/accounts here on Bluesky, I’m going to give it a try this weekend.
