I don't think that Netanyahu, whom I hate with all my heart, is responsible for Zionism being turned into a slur. That project started well before his first term. (I'm 59 and have been watching closely since the early 80's.)

The word Zionist shouldn't be "deployed" at all. Many Jews experience it as extremely hurtful & exclusionary the way this word, which has always been beautiful to us because it represents our liberation, is used as a slur. Couldn't you just agree to not do that, instead of pushing back even subtly?

The article is specific. It's not about people who support a ceasefire. It's about people "who support Hamas, who tear down pictures of kidnapped children, who march with Iranian Holocaust-deniers, who call for Israel’s destruction and the murder of its citizens".

I read him as referring to the military campaign in Gaza with that "moral suicide" phrase. Certainly the religious-Zionist extremists don't help. But they didn't create Hamas (arguably, however, Netanyahu helped create Hamas, and I'm happy to hold him morally responsible, but not the IDF).

I like Drezner but this is not quite me. The "moral suicide" means Israel shouldn't be doing what it's doing. Okay, what it should be doing instead? He doesn't say, and that's always the test to me. I think, in this situation, condemnation is too easy if it doesn't include a suggested alternative.

I worry about this kind of thing. I fear that this kind of thing is how the Jewish people will gradually disappear in America. Too little fidelity to tradition and the usual boundaries. (What's with the 8-sided star instead of a magen David? And "people interested in Judaism"? We don't proselytize.)

The big mistake many American Jews make, I think, is to ignore how central Israel is to Jewish culture and hence identity. They may not like it, but it's just a cold fact. They think they can reinvent what it means to be Jewish, like Americans reinvent everything else, but it's impossible.
