For a non-Brit, this is the best explanation of how the British government functions or doesn't. @iandunt.bsky.social makes a case for anything BUT "clown show nonsense" as PM Starmer ponders next Cabinet Secretary. Will Antonia Romeo become 1st female secretary?

Who were the foreign nationals chatting about Jared Kushner and what was the topic they were discussing, other than he's a genius at every project his FIL gives him? And why this locked safe stipulation?
The highly classified whistleblower complaint against Tulsi Gabbard involves an intercepted conversation in which two foreign nationals discussed Jared Kushner. The complaint was locked in a safe for eight months. The allegations about Kushner are significant if verified. (WSJ)

Also, how do you develop the judgment of a senior person if you don’t have the learning experiences of a junior person?
The thesis of AI productivity gains isn’t that AI can replace employees, it’s that a senior person using AI can outperform a group of junior people.

This is now broadly considered true in tech. The question is whether tech is an outlier or precursor to other industries seeing similar trends.

House passes SAVE America Act, sending Trump-backed election bill to the Senate
The legislation would overhaul federal election laws in all 50 states by imposing new voter ID and proof-of-citizenship requirements. But it faces a daunting path in the Senate.

Dems might also want to introduce a bill that separates out funding for the rest of the year for FEMA, the Coast Guard, and the other less problematic parts of DHS, and say they'll vote for that -- but no $ for ICE or Border Patrol.

And study it with Nick, who still teaches at Extension!
Study the Vietnam war as part of the overall History of the Cold War offered every fall via Harvard Extension!
The US was building up anti-communist militaries in a lot of places, but those advisers were not sent in as combat troops; this war belongs to LBJ.

The assassination of Diem was a lot more complicated than this, but I can't spend the day giving my War College lectures on Vietnam, sorry.

While all of @ronanfarrow.bsky.social's thread is critical information, I think this is the key post.
History shows a pattern here.

When governments begin criminalizing the observation of dissent—using technical oversteps as justification—it’s often a warning sign. We’ve seen similar patterns precede press crackdowns in countries like Turkey, Russia, and Myanmar.

The term “law enforcement” should not be used by media, except perhaps in quotations. It has sadly become an Orwellian term that is used to magically sanctify violence. Language matters. Be specific. Describe individuals with names and ranks. Say exactly what they did. Don’t repeat fascist hocum.

Also, may I say that I don’t agree with people saying ICE and CBP need “more training.” They’re doing exactly what this administration has trained them to—impose a reign of fear in blue cities. They don’t need more training. They need to be ripped up root and branch.

This can have consequences for how agents see themselves. If they put on clothes designed for war, they are more likely to see cities as hostile terrain and citizens as enemy combatants, which can increase the chance of violence. Link to the story here:
