Happy New Year everyone!
If your New Year's resolution was to read more books, or learn more stuff, then my book 100 BIBLE FILMS might be just the ticket.
It's wide-ranging, easy to read & beautifully illustrated. It also won an academic choice award.
Hope you have a smashing 2025!

Just watching SAINT MAUD (Rose Glass, 2019) set and shot, with a good deal of intention, in Scarborough on the N Yorkshire coast. Does anyone know of any other films set / shot there?

This is the kind of shot that makes me want to co-author a paper on ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN (1976).

The new Robin Hood series sounds interesting if only because it’s set during the rule of Henry II & Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Robin Hood review – Sean Bean gifts us the most gloriously bad TV offering of the year
It ticks every box you could wish for in your olde worlde trash: Sean Bean as the Sheriff of Nottingham, faerie smut … and not a bad wig in sight! Hurrah!

I followed this up by watching CARRIE (De Palma, 1976) unintentionally creating a weird double bill of 1976 films set in America about young women and the chasm between them and their mothers.
Eerie moment when the Twin Towers creep into the edge of the incredible final shot of Chantal Akerman's NEWS FROM HOME (1976).

Wait. Cheryl Hines who played Larry's wife Cheryl in the early season of CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM is married to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.? That both makes CURB seem more believable & life less believable.

This seems to be the 1st English post about the incredible L'AGNELLO (The Lamb, Mario Piredda, 2019) which is available on @netflix.com. Wonderful compositions, scenery & an amazing central performance from 1st timer Nora Stassi.

This raises the question, if the Oscars had a "knitwear" category what would some of its past winners be?

Managed to get a copy of “Judeophobia and the New Testament” by @apocalypsenow5.bsky.social, @evandeneykel.bsky.social & @drmjcwarren.bsky.social. Read most of part 1 already and there’s some great stuff in there, from a good mix of scholars.

Today would have been the great Angela Lansbury’s 100th birthday, so here she is, 76 years ago starring as Delilah's doomed sister Semadar in DeMille's SAMSON AND DELILAH (1949).

I'm watching the Monica Vitti film "La ragazza con la pistola" (Mario Monicelli, 1968) and the rugby scene is surprisingly not-awful.
