In Spain or dreaming of it
Real Madrid look like a relegation side going up against Barca. Parking the bus. Incapable of stringing three passes together. Absolutely nothing going forward. The Ancelotti era coming to a sad end tonight in Sevilla

A lot of sound and fury signifying nothing. That’s Real Madrid so far. Lots of passion, very little play. They sorely miss a midfielder who can take a beat, a breath, organize their attack, switch sides… or in other words, Toni Kroos. Need to bring on Ceballos soon if he’s even remotely fit

That performance from Real was no blip. It was in line with a season of mostly underwhelming performances and absolute beat downs when facing top teams. In four games vs Barca, Liverpool and Arsenal, they’ve been outscored 14-2. This is who they are this year. And that’s bc of a few key mistakes…

I don’t know how many days like this it’s going to take before Ancelotti realizes that this 4-3-3 with 2 midfielders in the back line, no ball distributor in the center of midfield, and 3 forwards who don’t defend at all will never work against top teams. It’s a recipe for disaster every time

Madrid in winter is so underrated. Sometimes you feel like you’ve got the place all to yourself

Nowhere I’d rather be to close out a great 2024 and ring in what’ll hopefully be an even better 2025. Feliz nochevieja desde Madrid

Somewhat sluggish start from Real today but man did they turn it around. Mbappe’s goal might get the headlines but Arda Guler is something special. The kid can play

Can’t beat a weekend morning run through the Retiro. Perfect way to start the day

One of those gorgeous days when the Madrid sky is the bluest blue

San Sebastián will always top my list, but Sevilla is awfully close. 75 degrees and sunny helps, too

Spent the morning wandering around the Alcázar and could’ve spent hours more. They don’t make em like this anymore

Thankful to be here in beautiful Sevilla today, where the sun is shining, the jamon is ever present, and the tiny back alleys all lead somewhere special

A night out in Sevilla. La Flor del Toranzo came recommended by a local friend and it didn’t disappoint. One of those old school Spanish bars that oozes character, is packed with regulars, and churns out fantastic tapas. And of course in typical Spanish fashion it doesn’t even open until 8p

No day in Madrid is complete without vermouth and gildas

“Kylian over to you.” All eyes on Anfield tonight. Real looked good at Leganes Sunday, but Liverpool away is a different beast. Oddly enough Vini’s absence could help since Mbappe can play on the left & Bellingham through the middle. But can the makeshift defense survive Salah, Diaz & Co.? We’ll see

I adore Spain but a few things always baffle me:

That waiters never bring the credit card reader to the table with the bill. It’s always a second trip, as if it’s a surprise that you’re paying with card

That the train boarding process is a total free for all. No intercom announcements. Just mayhem

Madrid isn’t for everyone, but it’s certainly for me. Love it more and more every time I’m here

My kids have decided that the swing in Plaza de Santa Ana is their personal playground and honestly who am I to argue

Businesslike win for Real Madrid at Leganes highlighted by this Valverde pile driver. Ancelotti finally finding some balance in midfield which makes the whole thing go. Guler, Ceballos, Cama & Jude all good. Very impressed by Asencio at CB but let’s see if he can do it on the big stage at Anfield

Last Real Madrid game of the year for me brings us to Butarque and gives us a bonus @sidlowe.bsky.social sighting too

My kind of Saturday morning

A win is a win…except when you lose another defender for the season. Add Militao to the rehab room at Real Madrid, in addition to Carvajal, Alaba, Tchoua. Bright spot is Asencio looks promising & the midfield is way better with Camavinga at defensive mid. Good enough to hold up at Anfield? We’ll see

Home to Osasuna in early Nov is a game you wouldn’t pay much attention to, but we’ll learn a thing or two tmrw about this Real Madrid side. The Milan, Barca and Lille defeats have been enough of a wake up call. Time to find out if Ancelotti has got the answers to fix this (I’ll admit, I’m skeptical)
