Maths teacher in North Wales. Currently in my 11th year.
Key vocab! How do you deal with? We have a 'unit vocabulary' sheet that students glue into books and fill in as we go- feels clunky. As a school, we 'drill' vocab every lesson (choral response). This hasn't got 100% buy in yet @justmaths.bsky.social @resourceaholic.bsky.social @jemmaths.bsky.social

How do we teach efficient methods? I have students who automatically go to bus stop for any division, including times table inverses e.g. I had a girl today use bus stop for 24 ÷ 12

If you had a limited budget for manipulatives for a department, what would you spend it on? @mrmattock.bsky.social @studymaths.bsky.social

@numberclub.com hey! I have tried downloading your app to use with my son through Google Play and it said it was made for an older version of Android. Is there a work around?

Taking over as KS3 lead from Sept. My head is spinning with where to start. Any advice? I've settled on developing retrieval do nows and mapping out the topics that need to be covered.

I’ve kept every single one. I call it my “don’t quit teaching” folder.

Give a card. Say something nice. Don’t lie.

Does anyone use oversized exercise books in maths? Trying to tackle time spent by dept trimming down a4 worksheets and also just scrappy books in general! Moving away from booklets of WRM worksheets this year at KS3

@realgeoffbarton.bsky.social Anything out there on how to ensure conversations students are having remain on task? I think this is the biggest challenge for our school in implementing. Very quickly chatter spreads and becomes difficult to track who is and isn't sticking to the task.

@adamboxereducation.bsky.social Hello! What is the slickest set up you suggest with mini whiteboards? At the moment I have zipped A4 bags with 2 whiteboards and the pens with rubbers on the top. They get so dirty from using them every lesson and I haven't found an easy way to clean them ...

The biggest short-term teaching problem is ATTENTION. Students who aren't paying attention can't learn.

The biggest long-term problem is MEMORY. You can smash out the best lesson ever, but if you don't have a long term memory strategy you're wasting your breath.

#Mathstoday A student absolutely did not believe me when I said algebra was like a mathematical language used across the world. He said there was no way they did this stuff of the Isle of Man.

What advice do you give students starting GCSEs who still don't know their timestables? Are there any apps they can use that aren't patronising?
