Welcome back, you wild and weird sport. 🎾
I think Osaka just needs to pick a theme every time she plays a slam because it seems like it works for her? Know the Black Lives Matter masks and the LaBubus are radically different in terms of tone, but both create a similar motivation in that she wants to share the next one with people.

Errani and Paolini are playing doubles in Armstrong, and the place is PACKED. Very few seats to be had. Might be the Venus effect at work here (she and Leylah are playing next), but I also think the mixed doubles showcase helped, too. What a wonderful side effect of an out-of-the-box idea

When the #USOpen leads its homepage with a picture of the wrong Kudermetova (Aryna is playing Polina; Veronika has already lost). Womp womp

Everyone’s shipping Carlos and Emma (which I do get - they would be GORGEOUS together), but I think it’s time we all start shipping Casper and Iga because they are SO cute

In the last qualies match of the day at the #USOpen, 19-year-old junior Aussie Open champ Rei Sakamoto came back from a set and a break down and won 10-8 in a final-set tiebreak with a huge crowd — and then knelt down and mimed pulling a Samurai sword from his hip.

…HOW CAN EVERYONE NOT LOVE TENNIS

Jasmine Paolini won the toss, chose to serve…and got broken by Coco Gauff. GIRL what are you doing we all could have predicted that would happen

Am generally pretty bored by men’s tennis, with a few exceptions. Terence Atmane has quickly made his way onto the latter list. 112 mph forehand?! Second-serve aces? Making Taylor Fritz and now Holger Rune look like passengers? Damn, this dude is fun.

Ben Shelton’s last press conference featured a reporter who called his girlfriend “Tiffany” and now a commentator has called her “Tiffany” 4 times. 1. DO YOUR FREAKING JOB. 2. His girlfriend is TRINITY Rodman, a gold medal-winning Olympic soccer champion. You should know her name anyway!! #Wimbledon

I handled it fine when Nadal and Murray retired, but hearing Martina Navratilova get choked up when trying to talk about Petra Kvitova after Kvitova’s last match at Wimbledon — hoo doggy, I’m in my feels right now #Wimbledon

I would just like to note that we all should have seen this coming after Lois Boisson beat Elise Mertens in the first round. Mertens NEVER loses before the third round - it’s her calling card. If I were her, I’d be feeling a lot better about that loss right now. #RolandGarros #FrenchOpen

As a generalist sports fan and hardcore tennis fan who has watched a whole lot of dumb trophy presentations, can I just say WTF IS THIS JACKET-GIVING CEREMONY-LIKE THING?!

Really happy that Jessie Pegula is picking up more titles. It was only a few years ago when she still had only one title, and that felt so strange given her consistency at the top of the game. Charleston today? Her 8th…still one title less than Coco.

I have never seen anyone take the ball as early (and hit it as precisely) as David Goffin just did against Alcaraz 🤯 absolute master class

I have a lot of opinions about the PTPA lawsuit that I’ve been sharing exclusively with my boyfriend and cat because I’m 1) not a professional tennis player and 2) not a lawyer but can basically be boiled down to: I love tennis, and also, tennis be dumb.

The coldest of takes: If you’re going to expand your draw, don’t give the first 32 seeds a bye as that will almost guarantee you to have no good first-round matches. 🤦🏻‍♀️ #IndianWells

Poor Foki. I hope he wins a title eventually

Alexandre Muller is having a TIME in Rio. Watched him against Fonseca, who was obviously struggling, but could not believe how many ridiculous drop shots he was hitting. Today against Cerundolo the movement was just as good as the strokes.

Bonus: He’s doing all this with Crohn’s disease

I can’t remember where I read this, but it’s important:

Why is it that when people think about traveling to the past, they worry about doing something small that will drastically change the present, but no one in the present thinks that doing something small today can drastically change the future?

We saw Fonseca in the best qualies match at the U.S. Open last year. He lost — and you could still tell he was going to be big time.

Moral of the story: Go to (or at least watch) qualifying!

Gosh, I’ll miss Diego Schwartzman once he loses (though that day is not today!). What an infectious enthusiasm, fierce competitor, and megawatt smile

The @servedpodcast.bsky.social episode with Madison and Bjorn is excellent. Loved when Bjorn said he looked forward to the Swiatek and Sabalenka matches because he got to think about the granular things as a coach when usually the game plan of “Swing away” is good enough. The best accidental flex 💪🏻
