Answer to previous #mtgtrivia question:

Mortal Combat was part of a 5-card alternate win cycle in Odyssey block. We left the black one for the set with more black cards.

I'm so sad to hear of Kai Budde's passing. I spent eight years working the Pro Tour and it allowed me the opportunity to watch Kai first hand as he made the greatest run of professional Magic that has ever been, winning seven Pro Tours! It was an honor to get to know him. Rest in peace, Kai.

Someone on my blog asked what plane has the best pizza. One of the planes I chose was Ravnica, so another person asked which guild made the best pizza. It was “Another Day of R&D Productivity Lost” (for fans of my old “Tales from the Pit” comic).

What card in Torment is part of a five-card cycle that runs through all of Odyssey block?

#WotCStaff
January 29, 2026 at 12:12 AM
Solution to previous #mtgtrivia question:

Richard designed the "Nightmare mechanic" (cards that remove things for as long as the creature was in play). The mechanic which was centered in black would go on to be a staple of white.

Today’s #mtgtrivia question:

Richard Garfield was not actually on the Torment design team, but is listed as being on the team for coming up with what (unnamed) mechanic in Odyssey design that we premiered in Torment?

#WotCStaff
January 26, 2026 at 2:47 PM
Answer to yesterday’s #mtgtrivia:

The set had colors not appearing in (roughly) the same number. The set had more black cards and less green and white cards. Judgment, the next set, did the opposite. We learned not to do that again.

Today’s #mtgtrivia question:

Torment did something, set structure-wise, we had never done before. What was it?

Answer to yesterday’s #mtgtrivia:

Cease-fire. After the art swaps, we had that art and that rules text. I had the name and flavor text to help tie them together. I was very proud of the name.

Today’s #mtgtrivia question:

Near the end of Odyssey development, we moved around a bunch of the art (something we no longer do), which resulted in us having a card effect and art that didn’t match. I said I’d connect them with the name. What card am I talking about?

Today’s #mtgtrivia question:

The Magic brand team, at the time, was worried that Squirrels were “too cute”, so I came up with the art description in the set to show Squirrels could be a bit darker. What card am I talking about?

Today’s #mtgtrivia question:

For one piece of Odyssey flavor text, I hung the art on a wall and asked people to come up with flavor text that matched it. What card am I talking about? (Hint: the flavor text was in the top 5 *and* bottom five in market research.)
