I don’t know how to to nudge the world in the right direction. I have no magic ring to throw into a volcano. I don’t see Legolas coming to the rescue. But we cannot be paralyzed into inaction. My mother used to say “There is always a solution. We just have to find it.” I hope she was right.

Now, most of those who could tell the story are gone. And here we are again. Voting for authoritarian leaders who offer easy solutions to complex problems. Ignoring history, turning off empathy. So full of fear and resentment that we would rather burn the world down than seek common solutions.

My father was the same age as my children are now during World War II - a time that once felt incredibly distant. Today, I realize that World War II ended only 39 years before I was born - shorter than I have now lived. A fresh memory for a significant portion of the adult population at the time.
