This week's Nashville Public Art entries are from the Queens mixed-use residential community that recently opened in the WeHo District on the near south side. The entrance to the parking garage honors every single construction worker who helped build it, listing them by name.

Mark’s Prog Rock Promenade: “Across the Waters” by Triumvirat (1972). From the German trio’s first album, the concept piece “Mediterranean Tales.” The ELP influence is strong…but these guys could sure deliver the goods in their own right.

Mark’s Movie Picks: “Wicked” (2024). The prequel of sorts to the “Wizard of Oz” (1939) movie & early 1900s Frank Baum novels that gives backstory on how/why the Witch of the West became wicked. Some of the songs are quite strong & are complimented by creative choreography & sets. I give it an A-.

Mark’s Prog Rock Promenade: “Fainting in Coils” by Bill Bruford (1979). From the former Yes/King Crimson drummer’s 2nd album, “One of A Kind,” this crazed instrumental swerves thru various time signatures & wild soloing by guitarist Alan Holdsworth, bassist Jeff Berlin & keyboardist Dave Stewart.

BT: In the 70s & 80s, there was no more scorching rock guitarist than Neal Schon. Whether w/ Santana, or later as a founding member with Journey, his incendiary playing was a highlight of recordings and live performances. His insatiable joy about music is evident in this interview with Rick Beato.

Mark’s Movie Picks: “Amelie” (2001). This French film is charming, whimsical, comically engaging with its several subplots revolving around a shy, introverted young woman who has to overcome a stilted childhood to find her calling and perhaps even true love. I give it an A+.

Mark’s Movie Picks: “Melancholia” (2011). A strange, haunting character study about depression with some sci-fi trappings. Only saw it once in the theater, yet some of the images have stuck with me nearly 15 years later. I give it a B.
