According to William Friedkin, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th choice to play the mom in 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘹𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘵 were: Audrey Hepburn (who was living in Rome), Anne Bancroft (who was pregnant), Jane Fonda (who called the script "capitalistic trash"), and Ellen Burstyn who had lobbied Friedkin hard for the role.
