okay... I think I'm gonna do this.

I'm Marisa. I like hiking, teaching writing, trivia nights, reading with my cat, tweeting silly things, and having bad opinions my employer would disagree with.

Previously I've lived in Indiana, Oregon, Ohio, Kentucky, and Virginia. I now live in Utah! 🏔️
one small satisfaction when flying is not paying to check a bag and then at the gate being begged to check it for free and a cookie or upgrade to make space like yes. I have successfully scammed the scammer. it's a small win

on one hand, making online course videos feels very cringe (playing back your face, expressions, hand gestures, voice, etc). on the other hand, as an english professor I already embrace The Cringe

Hi. Hello. GRAMMARLY IS NOT A WRITING TOOL. IT IS SURVEILLANCE CAPITALISM AND LINGUISTIC HOMOGENIZATION IN A TRENCHCOAT.

"gen AI can write your lesson plan!" that's what my PhD is for. can genAI make my hand-me-down pdfs cleaner and more accessible instead

ya gotta love the way ancestry dot com is like "we found a yearbook photo of your beloved dead family member... and put it behind a paywall 🥰"

FYI I could be posting so many peaceful paddleboarding pics this summer if only I weren't too nervous to bring my phone onboard

spotify replaces human playlist curators with AI and the "160 BPM" playlist is all 140 BPM or lower. "mellow cello" has songs with no cello anywhere to be seen. I'm so sick of this, man

added some forbidden flags & forbidden words to this semester's medieval cosplay
April 26, 2025 at 8:53 PM
ah, academia... how many other non-theatre/renfaire jobs expect you to wear medieval robes a couple times a year?

From my work with @nobugsnous.bsky.social and @jsanofranchini.bsky.social

GenAI hype is...
*Speculative, not specific
*Future-oriented without attention the present (in terms of both harm and capabilities)
*Relies on and/or furthers dubious narratives of inevitable technological progress

before spring break: frustrated, angry over small things, overwhelmed by post-spring break deadlines

after some time with extra sleep, getting lost in some canyons, avoiding my work laptop, and getting knocked on my butt a few days by illness: same number of deadlines, WAY more pleasant about it
March 10, 2025 at 6:57 PM
me at the start of the day: oof. too many deadlines. a little worried

me at the end of the day: has somehow jumped on board another thing because it would be soooo coooooooool

three weeks in, my second semester as a faculty member seems to only have two moods:
1. how does this work? why don't i know this yet? i'm so frustrated i've been here six months i should know this (continues to be frustrated with self/world)
2. i think i actually know what I'm doing?? this rules!

in 2024 I got a tenureline job, moved cross-country, defended my dissertation, walked across scotland, took too many planes, and assembled a lot of furniture.

I think in 2025 I'm just gonna chill for a sec
