Last May a tornado hit St. Louis, pummeling some of the city’s most vulnerable neighborhoods.

There was no way it wouldn’t touch STL’s brick salvage economy. I got to follow along with a bricklayer, who’s racing to build back houses before it’s too late.

A tour of a 90,000 specimen-mycological collection was not on my 2025 bingo card.
Why were fungi incorrectly classified as plants for more than 200 years? Patty Kaishian, the curator of mycology at the New York State Museum has the answer. This week on Outside/In, @marinahenke.bsky.social takes a field trip to Albany.

Patty Kaishian wants to change how we think about mushrooms. It starts with embracing that they're queer as heck.

Big news: After nearly a decade, DuPont has agreed to settle a class-action suit brought by the people of Hoosick Falls, NY, the community I spent years following for my book. All told, the village's roughly 3,000 residents will receive about $90 million in damages. #PFAS #ForeverChemicals

Absolutely fantastic new book by @mariahblake.bsky.social -- it was the (sobering) delight of some time off this week to finish "They Poisoned the World." For anyone who wonders what dogged environmental journalism is, look no further than Blake's footnote section -- a thing of absolute glory!
New at @searchlightnm.bsky.social: our own Molly Montgomery spoke with @mariahblake.bsky.social, author of “They Poisoned the World,” an important new book about the history and toxic legacy of “forever chemicals.” (Which were an outgrowth of the Manhattan Project.) searchlightnm.org/new-mexico-p...

Been thinking a lot about big ships lately, over at @outsideinradio.bsky.social! This was a gnarly story to report: lots of fuzzy numbers, conflicting narratives and long-held truths.

As always, going directly to the people interacting with these ships reaped the most interesting answers.
This summer, more than 100 cruises will visit Portland, Maine. They arrive with a promise: more ships mean more money for a local economy. But how is that playing out on the ground?

@marinahenke.bsky.social spent the past few months charting these muddy waters.

Cruise ships are supposed to benefit local economies. Do they? Producer Marina Henke spent the months leading up to the 2025 cruise season charting these muddy waters in Portland, Maine.
