This is the case with Stéphane Passeron, who is opposed to the 2030 Winter Olympics being held in the Alps. For Passeron, even though he is a former top-level athlete, we must accept to “let go” of certain Olympic dreams when the future of the environment is at stake.

This example highlights the vulnerability of individual athletes when faced with the host country. When athletes use their performance to defend a cause, they are punished, while host countries do the same to promote their political ideologies and do not always face sanctions.

In the United States, they suffered constant social pressure and lost their jobs and several professional opportunities. It was only later that their actions were recognized as a historic moment in the fight against racial injustice.

This is a wonderful example. We can also highlight the courage of these athletes, whose actions were subsequently severely punished. They were expelled from the Olympic village and sent home.

Therefore, the Olympic Games have repeatedly been used as a political tool for propaganda purposes. We can see that the Olympic Games, officially presented as an apolitical event celebrating unity and sportsmanship, do not live up to the image they are supposed to convey.

The Games showcased a modern, united, and ambitious Russia, despite controversies related to human rights, corruption, and political tensions. Thus, Sochi 2014 served both to promote national prestige and to project a controlled and positive image of the Russian regime.

Vladimir Putin presented the event as proof of Russia's economic and technological power, investing record sums in infrastructure and ceremonies.

We have seen in class that certain sporting events are used to promote political ideologies. In fact, the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi were widely used by the Russian government as a propaganda tool to strengthen the country's image on the international stage.

I realized that men's sports are 15 times more visible than women's sports. This is an alarming reality that jeopardizes the future of female athletes.

I'm glad you pointed out the difference in media visibility between women and men. I did some research on the percentage of airtime or television broadcasts devoted to men in sports media compared to women.

The song 'Sweet Caroline' by Neil Diamond plays a media role in the sense of conveying emotions and cohesion in sporting moments. It aims to unite the public and create an atmosphere that marks a key moment in sporting events. Today, it is a ritual in American stadiums.

I was very surprised the first time I attended a hockey game. In my opinion, this direct and spectacular violence does not promote the values of sport. Respect and fair play between players are absent, whereas sport should primarily revolve around these values.

In addition, violence is more evident in the stands in France (especially in soccer), while in Canada, the atmosphere remains calmer and the tension is mainly on the field. Thus, France favors controlled violence, while Canada is more accepting of visible and unapologetic violence.

In France, in sports such as rugby or judo, contact is present but strictly regulated: control and respect are valued. In Canada, on the other hand, sports such as ice hockey accept more direct and spectacular violence, for example with fights between players.

I am an exchange student from France. I realized that violence in sports is not perceived in the same way in both countries.

By winning on merit and talent, Owens performed an act of positive deviance: he broke away from the racist norms of his time to defend, by example, the values of equality, courage, and respect. His achievement marked the history of sport and the fight against discrimination.

We can take the example of Jesse Owens' positive deviance or overconformity. At the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, African-American athlete Jesse Owens won four gold medals under the watchful eye of Adolf Hitler, who advocated the superiority of the Aryan race.

We can take the example of Isaiah Thomas. This athlete tore his hip and, despite the pain, continued to play to help his team. His injury worsened, requiring major surgery. His level of play never returned to the same level and his career declined sharply after this episode.

"a moment of victory is temporary, but the long-term consequences or physical harm and stress on our bodies can be permanent."
This sentence made a big impression on me and, in my opinion, sums up the moral of this article.

Alana Smith, a non-binary American athlete, competed in the women's skateboarding event at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. By refusing to define themselves as male or female, they challenge the norm that sport must be strictly divided according to binary gender.
